When you use it
- 1
Guessing the cause from clues
Mr Weber isn't at his desk; he has probably popped out to the post office.
The client isn't replying to our email; she probably hasn't even opened it yet.
You see a result now, like an empty desk or no reply. You guess what happened before. Add wohl, vermutlich or wahrscheinlich.
💡 Tip: Despite the name, Futur II is almost never about the future here.
- 2
Reassuring someone
Don't worry about the project manager; he will have caught his connecting flight in Frankfurt.
Don't panic about the keys: you'll have just left them on the chest of drawers at home.
Tell someone not to worry: the problem has probably already sorted itself out.
- 3
Reports and investigations
Judging by the skid marks, the driver probably took the bend far too fast.
The burglars probably got onto the company site through the unlit back gate.
Accident reports, police reports and the news use it to describe what probably happened, without stating it as a fact.
The forms
Futur II: werden + Partizip II + haben/sein
You need three verb parts: werden in the present, the Partizip II (past participle), and haben or sein at the end.
| Person | werden (position 2) | Middle | Partizip II | End |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | werde | das Dokument wohl | übersehen | haben. |
| du | wirst | den Hinweis sicher | verstanden | haben. |
What to notice
Only werden changes with the person. Partizip II + haben/sein stay together at the end.

Step by step
- 1
Write your guess in the Perfekt
Lisa is absent today. Write what you think happened, in the Perfekt.
- Lisa ist krank geworden.Lisa has fallen ill.
- 2
Put wird in position 2
Swap the Perfekt helper (ist) for werden in the present. For Lisa that is wird.
- Lisa wird ...
- 3
Add a particle
Put wohl or vermutlich right after wird. Now it is clearly a guess.
- Lisa wird wohl ...
- 4
End with Partizip II + haben/sein
Put the participle near the end. The helper from the Perfekt (sein) comes last, as an infinitive.
- Lisa wird wohl krank geworden sein.Lisa has probably fallen ill.
- 5
In a subordinate clause, wird goes last
After dass or weil, wird moves to the very end, after haben or sein.
I suspect that Lisa has probably fallen ill.

Exceptions

For something done to someone or something, add worden: werden + Partizip II + worden sein.
The confidential report was probably copied by unauthorised people.
A guess about "had to" or "could" needs a long form: haben + two infinitives at the end. In speech, people say musste wohl instead.
The technician probably had to leave the server room early yesterday.
The technician probably had to leave the server room early. (everyday version)
Movement without an object takes sein. With an accusative object, like den Firmenwagen, use haben.
He probably drove to Munich in the company car.
He probably drove the company car to Munich himself.
Futur II can mean something will be finished by a future time. In everyday German, people use the Perfekt with a time word instead.
By 6 p.m. tomorrow I will have finished the presentation.
By 6 p.m. tomorrow I will have finished the presentation. (usual form)
Don't mix it up
Futur II, müssen, dürfte, Konjunktiv II or Futur I?
German has several ways to guess about the past or imagine it. Compare how sure each one sounds.

| Likely, based on the evidence. | He is likely to have forgotten the report. |
| Konjunktiv II (past) | Er hätte den Bericht vergessen. | Unreal: it did not happen. | He would have forgotten the report [if ...]. |

In real life
Mysterious outage on Monday morning
Two colleagues arrive at the office on Monday morning. The network is down. · Tap EN for English.
- Kollegin
Guten Morgen, Thomas!
- Thomas
Ach so!
- Kollegin
Hoffen wir es. Ich rufe ihn gleich zur Sicherheit an.
That's the whole topic.
