With bekommen + Partizip II, the person who receives becomes the subject: Ich bekomme das Paket geliefert.

Focus on the person who receives
- Der Kunde bekommt die bestellten Möbel direkt in das Wohnzimmer geliefert.The customer gets the furniture delivered straight into the living room.
- Die Mitarbeiterin bekommt die Fahrtkosten vom Arbeitgeber erstattet.The employee gets her travel costs paid back by her employer.
Use it when the receiver matters more than the thing. It is common in customer service, deliveries and everyday speech.

kriegen, bekommen or erhalten
- Ich kriege morgen endlich mein Fahrrad repariert.I'm finally getting my bike repaired tomorrow. (casual)
- Frau Meier bekommt das defekte Smartphone anstandslos umgetauscht.Ms Meier is getting the faulty smartphone exchanged without any fuss. (neutral)
The grammar is the same. kriegen is casual speech. bekommen is neutral. erhalten is formal: contracts, terms and conditions, official letters.
💡 Tip: Avoid kriegen in business or official letters.

When something bad happens to you
- Wegen eines schweren Rotlichtverstoßes bekam der Autofahrer die Fahrerlaubnis entzogen.The driver had his licence taken away for a serious red-light offence.
- Der langjährige Mieter bekommt wegen Eigenbedarfs die Wohnung gekündigt.The long-term tenant is being given notice because the landlord needs the flat for his own use.
It also works when something is taken away from you, or an action hurts you.

Find the three parts
In the active sentence, find the subject, the receiver in the dative and the thing in the accusative.
- Die Spedition (subject) liefert der Familie (dative) die Waschmaschine (accusative).The delivery company delivers the washing machine to the family.

The dative receiver becomes the new subject, in the nominative.

Conjugate bekommen, erhalten or kriegen to match the new subject.

Keep the object, add the participle
The accusative object stays as it is. The main verb goes to the end as Partizip II: liefert → geliefert.

Name the person or company with von + dative.

Common mistakes

Ich bekomme von den Kollegen geholfen.✓ Mir wird von den Kollegen geholfen.
helfen takes only a dative. Use the werden-passive instead.
✕
Dem Kunden bekommt die Ware morgen zugeschickt.✓ Der Kunde bekommt die Ware morgen zugeschickt.
The receiver must be the subject, in the nominative: der Kunde.
✕
Ich bekomme das defekte Gerät umtauschen.✓ Ich bekomme das defekte Gerät umgetauscht.
bekommen needs a Partizip II, never an infinitive.
Exceptions

The verb needs a receiver in the dative and an object in the accusative: schenken, leihen, schicken, bringen, stehlen, erklären, überweisen.
helfen, danken and gratulieren take only a dative. Ich bekomme geholfen is heard in some regions, but it is not standard. Use the werden-passive.
- Mir wird geholfen. (NOT: Ich bekomme geholfen.)I am being helped.
- Ihm wurde gratuliert. (NOT: Er bekommt gratuliert.)He was congratulated.
Here the dative person receives nothing, so there is no bekommen-passive.
- NOT: Der Radfahrer bekam ausgewichen.
With sich etwas kaufen or sich etwas wünschen, the bekommen-passive does not work.
- NOT: Ich bekomme mir ein Buch gekauft.
A modal verb plus the bekommen-passive in the past gets clumsy. Use the werden-passive instead.
- Das Paket musste ihm geliefert werden.The parcel had to be delivered to him. (better)
- Er hat das Paket geliefert bekommen müssen.He has had to get the parcel delivered. (clumsy)

bekommen-passive, werden-passive, lassen or full verb?
Four similar structures. The subject plays a different role in each.
