To guess what is true right now, use werden + infinitive with wohl: Er wird wohl krank sein.

The main points

werden + infinitive + wohl can mean a guess about right now.
Add wohl, wahrscheinlich or vermutlich, or it may sound like a plan.
With schon, it calms someone down: Das wird schon stimmen.
werden in position 2, infinitive at the end; in a subclause, wird goes last.
For a guess about the past, use Futur II: gewesen sein.

Where someone is or how they are
- Wo ist Herr Müller? – Er wird wohl krank im Bett liegen.Where is Mr Müller? – He's probably lying ill in bed.
- Das Telefon klingelt durch; Frau Sommer wird wahrscheinlich im Kundengespräch sein.The phone keeps ringing; Ms Sommer is probably in a client meeting.
You don't know for sure where someone is or how they are. Use werden + infinitive with a word like wohl to give your best guess.

What someone is doing right now
- Im Obergeschoss brennt noch Licht; der Nachbar wird wohl noch an seiner Steuererklärung arbeiten.The light is still on upstairs; the neighbour is probably still working on his tax return.
- Er geht nicht an sein Handy; er wird wohl gerade die Kinder von der Kita abholen.He isn't answering his mobile; he's probably picking the kids up from nursery right now.
You see clues and guess what someone is doing at this moment.

Calming someone down with schon
- Keine Panik, er wird den Hausschlüssel schon dabeihaben.Don't panic, I'm sure he has the house key on him.
- Mach dir keine Sorgen um den Nachbarn; der wird schon zurechtkommen.Don't worry about the neighbour; I'm sure he's managing fine.
With schon, the guess sounds reassuring: don't worry, everything is fine.

werden is conjugated and stands in position 2. The infinitive goes to the end.

Step by step

Start with the present fact
Say the fact you suspect in the present tense.
- Herr Becker ist im Urlaub.Mr Becker is on holiday.

Replace the verb with werden
Conjugate werden to match the subject. In a main clause, it stands in position 2.

Add wohl or wahrscheinlich
Put the probability word in the middle, after any pronouns. Without it, the sentence can sound like a plan.

Put the infinitive at the end
The original verb goes to the end as an infinitive: ist → sein.
- Herr Becker wird wohl im Urlaub sein.Mr Becker is probably on holiday.

In a subclause, wird goes last
After dass, weil or ob, the conjugated verb wird goes to the very end, right after the infinitive.
- Ich vermute, dass Herr Becker wohl im Urlaub sein wird.I suspect Mr Becker is probably on holiday.

Common mistakes

~~Wo ist Herr Klein? – Er wird krank morgen.~~
Wo ist Herr Klein? – Er wird wohl krank sein.
For a guess about today, don't add morgen. Use wird wohl with the infinitive sein.
~~Der Nachbar wird wohl ist im Urlaub.~~
Der Nachbar wird wohl im Urlaub sein.
The second verb is always an infinitive: sein, not ist.
~~Er wird schlafen. (meant as a guess about now)~~
Er wird wohl gerade schlafen.
Without wohl or gerade, it can sound like a future event.

Exceptions

morgen makes it a future plan. gerade makes it a guess about now. wohl tells the listener it's a guess. Without such words, the sentence is unclear.
- Er wird morgen nach München fahren.He will drive to Munich tomorrow. (future)
- Er wird nach München fahren.Unclear: a plan, or a guess about now?
- Er wird wohl gerade nach München fahren.He's probably driving to Munich right now. (clear guess)
Use wohl nicht for a simple negative guess. Use wohl kaum for strong doubt.
- Herr Schneider wird wohl nicht daheim sein; die Rollläden sind unten.Mr Schneider probably isn't at home; the shutters are down.
- Bei diesem Lärm wird er wohl kaum schlafen.He can hardly be sleeping with this noise.
Modal verbs in Konjunktiv II can also make a guess. dürfte means the same as wird wohl, but sounds more formal and is typical of the news.
- Er wird wohl im Büro sein. = Er dürfte im Büro sein.Both mean: "He's probably in the office."
- Er könnte im Büro sein.He could be in the office.
Tip: könnte is a little less sure.
Futur I is about now or later. For a guess about the past, use Futur II: werden + Partizip II + haben or sein.
- Er wird wohl zu Hause sein.He's probably at home right now.
- Er wird wohl den Bus verpasst haben.He probably missed the bus.
