Emphasis: cleft sentences and fronting
Hervorhebung: Spaltsätze und Vorfeld
Put the key word in position 1, or split the sentence: Was mich stört, ist der Zeitdruck.
Emphasis side by side
| Type | Pattern | German example | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutral order | Subjekt + Verb + Objekt | Wir kritisieren diesen Beschluss. | States a fact, no special emphasis. |
| Emphatic fronting | Objekt + Verb + Subjekt | Diesen Beschluss kritisieren wir scharf. | Focus on the object; contrast. |
| True cleft (Es-Spaltsatz) | Es ist/sind + focus + relative clause | Es ist dieser Beschluss, den wir kritisieren. | Points to exactly this; rejects other claims. |
| Pseudo-cleft (Was-Satz) | Was ... + ist/war + focus | Was wir kritisieren, ist dieser Beschluss. | Builds tension, then names the key point. |
The main points
- Fronting: object first, verb still second: Diesen Punkt lehnen wir ab.
- Es ist / sind X, der/die/das …: points to exactly one thing.
- sein agrees with the focus noun: Es sind die Kosten, die …
- Was …, ist … builds suspense; with a preposition use worauf, worum.
- Don't copy English time clefts. Say: Gestern haben wir …
Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
Fronting: the key word first
- Diesen riskanten Vorschlag lehnen wir aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen kategorisch ab.This risky proposal, of all things, we reject outright for economic reasons.
- Unseren treuesten Kunden können wir diese drastische Preiserhöhung kaum zumuten. Our most loyal customers, of all people, we can hardly ask to accept this drastic price rise.
Move an object or an adverbial into position 1 (das Vorfeld). This sets up a contrast. The verb stays in position 2.
💡 Tip: Useful when you argue, negotiate or write an opinion piece.
- 2
Cleft sentences: Es ist X, der …
- Es ist die mangelnde Transparenz der Geschäftsleitung, die das Misstrauen der Belegschaft schürt.It is the management's lack of transparency that fuels the staff's distrust.
- Es war der Betriebsrat, der in letzter Sekunde einen tragfähigen Kompromiss durchgesetzt hat.It was the works council that pushed through a workable compromise at the last second.
An Es-Spaltsatz (cleft sentence) shows exactly who or what is responsible and rules out other options. It has a main clause with es + sein, then a relative clause.
- 3
Pseudo-clefts with was
- Was mich an Ihrer Argumentation am meisten stört, ist der Mangel an belastbaren Zahlen. What bothers me most about your line of argument is the lack of reliable figures.
- Was wir in dieser akuten Krisensituation dringend benötigen, ist Entschlossenheit statt endloser Debatten. What we urgently need in this acute crisis is resolve instead of endless debates.
A Was-Spaltsatz first sums up the background. The key point comes after ist, like a punchline. This builds suspense in a debate.
The forms
Emphasis side by side
The same statement four ways. Fronting keeps one main clause. Clefts split it into two clauses.
| Type | Pattern | German example | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutral order | Subjekt + Verb + Objekt | Wir kritisieren diesen Beschluss. | States a fact, no special emphasis. |
| Emphatic fronting | Objekt + Verb + Subjekt | Diesen Beschluss kritisieren wir scharf. | Focus on the object; contrast. |
| True cleft (Es-Spaltsatz) | Es ist/sind + focus + relative clause | Es ist dieser Beschluss, den wir kritisieren. | Points to exactly this; rejects other claims. |
| Pseudo-cleft (Was-Satz) | Was ... + ist/war + focus | Was wir kritisieren, ist dieser Beschluss. | Builds tension, then names the key point. |
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Start with a neutral sentence
Take a normal sentence. The object sits in the middle: die steigenden Betriebskosten.
- Wir müssen vor allem die steigenden Betriebskosten senken.Above all, we have to reduce the rising operating costs.
- 2
Fronting
Move the object to position 1. The verb müssen stays in position 2. Then come the subject and the rest.
- Die steigenden Betriebskosten müssen wir vor allem senken. The rising operating costs are what we have to reduce above all.
- 3
Es-Spaltsatz
Start with Es sind, because Betriebskosten is plural. Add the noun, then a relative clause with the verb at the end: die wir senken müssen.
- Es sind vor allem die steigenden Betriebskosten, die wir senken müssen. It is above all the rising operating costs that we have to reduce.
- 4
Was-Spaltsatz
Start with was and put the verbs at the end: wir vor allem senken müssen. Then comes sind (plural), then the answer.
- Was wir vor allem senken müssen, sind die steigenden Betriebskosten. What we have to reduce above all is the rising operating costs.
Part 3 of 4
Common mistakes
✕
Es ist die hohen Energiekosten, die den Betrieb gefährden.✓ Es sind die hohen Energiekosten, die den Betrieb gefährden.
sein agrees with the focus noun. Energiekosten is plural, so sind.
✕
Diesen Vorschlag wir lehnen kategorisch ab.✓ Diesen Vorschlag lehnen wir kategorisch ab.
Verb-second still applies: the verb comes right after the fronted object.
✕
Was stört mich an dem Plan, ist die fehlende Finanzierung.✓ Was mich an dem Plan stört, ist die fehlende Finanzierung.
The was-clause is a subordinate clause, so its verb goes to the end.
Exceptions

English often says "It was in 2024 that …". In German this sounds translated. Just put the time or the reason in position 1.
- Im Jahr 2024 haben wir uns kennengelernt. It was in 2024 that we met.
- Aus diesem Grund rufe ich an.That is why I am calling. (Not: ✗ Es ist aus diesem Grund, warum ...)
To stress the action itself, you can put the infinitive or the participle in position 1. Often aber or zwar follows.
- Zustimmen können wir diesem unausgegorenen Entwurf keinesfalls.Agree to this half-baked draft? That we certainly cannot do.
- Gewonnen haben wir die Wahl zwar nicht, aber wir haben deutlich zugelegt. We didn't win the election, it's true, but we gained a lot.
Two orders are possible: Es bin ich, der … or Ich bin es, der …. The verb after der is usually third person: trägt.
- Es bin ich, der die Verantwortung trägt. / Es bin ich, der ich die Verantwortung trage. It is I who bear the responsibility. (formal, literary)
- Ich bin es, der die Verantwortung trägt.I am the one who bears the responsibility. (more common)
After a long opening clause like Was … betrifft, German often adds so before the verb.
- Was die versprochenen Gehaltserhöhungen betrifft, so müssen wir die Belegschaft um Geduld bitten. As for the promised pay rises, we must ask the staff to be patient.
Don't mix it up
Four ways to say the same thing
Same content, four different kinds of focus.
| Structure | German example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral SVO | Wir verhandeln diesen Punkt morgen. | Plain statement. No special emphasis. |
| Vorfeld-Hervorhebung | Diesen Punkt verhandeln wir morgen. | Contrast: this point (not the others) comes tomorrow. |
| True cleft (Es-Spaltsatz) | Es ist dieser Punkt, den wir morgen verhandeln müssen. | Exclusive focus: this is the point that matters, no other. |
| Pseudo-cleft (Was-Spaltsatz) | Was wir morgen verhandeln müssen, ist dieser Punkt. | Build-up: gets attention first, then names the point. |
