- 1
Your own guess or a report?
Are you concluding from evidence? Use müssen, müsste, dürfte, kann or könnte. Are you passing on a claim? Use sollen or wollen.

Common mistakes
✕

Reports from other people take sollen. wollen is for claims about yourself.

A rumour today about yesterday: the modal stays in the present. Er sollte krank gewesen sein is not a current rumour.
- Er soll gestern krank gewesen sein.He is said to have been ill yesterday.
If the guess itself was made in the past, as in a story, use the Präteritum. In reported speech, use Konjunktiv I: müsse.
- Der Arzt war sich sicher: Der Patient musste die Warnsignale übersehen haben. The doctor was sure: the patient must have missed the warning signs.
- Der Arzt meinte gestern, der Patient müsse die Warnsignale übersehen haben. The doctor said yesterday that the patient must have missed the warning signs.
darf never means "probably". For that you need dürfte.
- Der Preis dürfte steigen. The price is likely to rise.
- Der Preis darf steigen. The price is allowed to rise.
werden: the passive is still to come or going on. worden sein: it has already happened.
- Das Gesetz soll geändert werden. The law is reportedly going to be changed. (or, as a plan: The law is to be changed.)
- Das Gesetz soll geändert worden sein. The law is said to have been changed already.
Er will Millionär sein can mean "he wants to be" or "he claims to be". With a past infinitive, it is almost always a claim.
- Er will Millionär sein.He wants to be a millionaire. / He claims to be a millionaire.
- Er will die E-Mail geschickt haben. He claims to have sent the email.
Don't mix it up
