Future tense with werden (A2) – German grammar

For promises and predictions, put werden in position 2 and the main verb at the end: Ich werde dir helfen.

Use werden + infinitive for a firm promise or a New Year's resolution (Vorsatz).

- Morgen wird es in Leipzig regnen.It will rain in Leipzig tomorrow.
- Das wird teuer sein.That will be expensive.
For forecasts like the weather, werden is common. The present is also used: Morgen regnet es.

werden changes with the subject and stands in position 2. The main verb stays in the infinitive at the end.

Choose the form of werden that matches the subject.

Send the main verb to the end
The main verb goes to the end in its dictionary form (the infinitive). Don't change it.
- Ich werde mehr Sport machen.I will do more sport.

Time word first? werden stays second
If a time word starts the sentence, werden comes next, then the subject.

The verb at the end stays in the infinitive: lernen.
~~Morgen ich werde arbeiten.~~
Morgen werde ich arbeiten.
Time word first? werden goes in position 2, then the subject.
~~Du wirdst das schaffen.~~
Du wirst das schaffen.
The du form is wirst, without d. The er form is wird.

In everyday speech, people usually use the present + a time word. Futur I is mainly for promises, emphasis and forecasts.
- Morgen fliege ich nach Frankfurt.I'm flying to Frankfurt tomorrow.
Without an infinitive at the end, werden means become (→ V50). With an infinitive, it means will.
- Er wird Arzt.He is going to be a doctor. (become)
- Er wird morgen kommen.He will come tomorrow.

Don't mix it up

Present for future or Futur I?

Both can talk about the future. For everyday plans, use the present + a time word. For firm promises and forecasts, use werden.
