Use the imperative to tell someone what to do: Komm bitte! Kommt bitte! Kommen Sie bitte!

Regular verbs (kommen, fragen)

The main points

du: no du, no -st: Komm!, Mach!, Nimm!
ihr: the ihr form without ihr: Kommt!, Macht!
Sie: infinitive + Sie: Kommen Sie!, Machen Sie!
e → i stays (Gib!); the a → ä umlaut goes away (Fahr!).
sein: Sei!, Seid!, Seien Sie! Add bitte to sound polite.

A bare command can sound rude. bitte, mal or doch make it a friendly request.

Warnings and advice
- Pass auf! Da kommt ein Fahrrad!Watch out! There's a bike coming!
- Sei vorsichtig an der Baustelle!Be careful at the building site!
Warn someone about danger, or give helpful advice.

The forms

Regular verbs (kommen, fragen)

Three forms for three kinds of "you": du (one friend), ihr (two or more friends), Sie (polite, one or more adults).

What to notice

du and ihr drop the pronoun: Komm!, Kommt!. Sie keeps it, right after the verb: Kommen Sie!

Step by step

Who are you talking to?
One friend or child → du form. Two or more of them → ihr form. One or more adults, politely → Sie form.

Build the du form
Take the du form; drop du and -st. Keep e → i/ie. Drop the a → ä umlaut. Stem in -t, -d, consonant + m/n: add -e.
- du nimmst → Nimm!
- du fährst → Fahr!

Build the ihr form
Take the ihr form and drop ihr. Nothing else changes.
- ihr wartet → Wartet!, ihr fahrt → Fahrt!

Build the Sie form
Take the infinitive and put Sie right after it. Only sein is different: Seien Sie!

Verb first, then soften
The verb goes in position 1. Add bitte, mal or doch to sound friendly.

Common mistakes

Don't say du in a normal command.

a → ä verbs lose the umlaut in the imperative.

Exceptions

du fährst, but Fahr!. du läufst, but Lauf!. Verbs that always have an umlaut keep it: Hör!, Erklär!
- du schläfst → Schlaf!
Verbs with e → i or e → ie keep the new vowel in the du form.
- Gib! Lies! Hilf! Nimm!Give! Read! Help! Take!
The du form is Hab! (Habe! is also possible). The ihr and Sie forms are regular.
- Hab keine Angst!Don't be afraid!
- Haben Sie einen schönen Tag!Have a nice day!
Like in the present (→ V01), -eln verbs drop the inner -e- and end in -e.
- sammeln → Sammle!Collect!
- klingeln → Klingle!Ring the bell!
The verb goes first, the prefix goes to the end (→ V04).

Don't mix it up

Imperative, statement or question?

Look at the verb, the pronoun and the punctuation. An imperative starts with the verb and usually ends with an exclamation mark.
