Wishes that can't come true
- Wäre der geschätzte Kollege heute doch bloß unter uns!If only our esteemed colleague were among us today!
- Hätten wir nur rechtzeitig auf die Warnungen der Experten gehört!If only we had listened to the experts' warnings in time!
An unreal wish (Irrealer Wunschsatz) stands alone: Konjunktiv II in position 1, almost always doch, nur or bloß, and an exclamation mark.
💡 Tip: Typical in speeches, toasts and congratulations (Reden und Glückwünsche).
- 2
Formal blessings with Möge
- Möge das Brautpaar auf seinem gemeinsamen Lebensweg stets von Glück und Harmonie begleitet werden!May the couple always have happiness and harmony on their way through life!
- Mögen die kommenden Jahre Ihnen bei bester Gesundheit weiterhin viel Schaffenskraft schenken!May the coming years give you lots of energy for your work, in the best of health!

- Sei die bevorstehende Aufgabe auch noch so schwer, wir werden sie mit vereinten Kräften meistern. However difficult the task ahead may be, we will master it together.

A concession says something stays true despite an obstacle. The verb goes first, auch noch so into the middle. It means auch wenn … noch so.

What to notice
Without doch, nur or bloß, a wish sounds like an unfinished question. Only poetry and old-fashioned style leave it out: Wär ich ein Vogel!
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Wish: start from the fact you regret
Start with the fact: the mayor didn't come. Then use the Konjunktiv II past: wäre gekommen.
- Der Bürgermeister ist leider nicht zu unserer Jubiläumsfeier gekommen. The mayor unfortunately did not come to our anniversary celebration.
- kommen → wäre gekommencome → would have come
- 2
Wish: verb first, particles, !
Put wäre in position 1. Add doch nur after the subject. Put the participle at the end and finish with an exclamation mark.
- Wäre der Bürgermeister doch nur zu unserer Jubiläumsfeier gekommen! If only the mayor had come to our anniversary celebration!
- 3
Concession: find the obstacle and the main point
Obstacle: the costs are very high. Main point: we will hold the full celebration.
- Die Kosten für den Festakt sind sehr hoch. The costs of the ceremony are very high.
- Wir werden die Feier in vollem Umfang durchführen. We will hold the celebration in full.
- 4
Concession: drop obwohl, verb first
Remove obwohl or auch wenn. Put the verb in position 1, ideally in Konjunktiv I or II. Add auch noch so before the adjective.
- Seien die Kosten für den Festakt auch noch so hoch, ...However high the costs of the ceremony may be, …
- 5
Concession: add the main clause
Add the main clause. You can link it with so or dennoch.
- Seien die Kosten für den Festakt auch noch so hoch, so werden wir die Feier dennoch in vollem Umfang durchführen. However high the costs of the ceremony may be, we will still hold the celebration in full.

Common mistakes
✕
Wäre er gestern gekommen!✓ Wäre er gestern doch gekommen! (or: doch nur / bloß)
Without doch, nur or bloß, this sounds like an unfinished question, not a wish.
✕
Möchte das neue Lebensjahr Ihnen Erfolg bringen!✓ Möge das neue Lebensjahr Ihnen Erfolg bringen!
Blessings use Konjunktiv I: Möge. Möchte means 'would like'.
✕
Sei die Kritik berechtigt, wir geben nicht auf.✓ Sei die Kritik auch noch so berechtigt, wir geben nicht auf. (or: Ist die Kritik auch berechtigt, ...)
auch noch so shows the 'no matter how' meaning. Without it, it sounds like a condition.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
Without doch, nur or bloß, a wish sounds like half a question. Only poetry and old-fashioned style sometimes leave it out: Wär ich ein Vogel!
- Hätte ich Zeit!Sounds like a question cut in half.
- Hätte ich doch Zeit! / Hätte ich nur Zeit!If only I had time! (clearly a wish)
After a verb-first concession, the main clause often starts with so. The verb follows in position 2. Without so, use normal word order.
- War der Weg zur Einigung auch steinig, so haben wir das Ziel nun erreicht.Rocky as the road to agreement was, we have now reached the goal.
For formal blessings, use Möge or Mögen. Today möchte means 'would like', so ✗ Möchte das Brautpaar glücklich werden sounds wrong.
- ✓ Möge das Brautpaar glücklich werden!May the bridal couple be happy!
In newspapers, the second sei es is often replaced by oder.
- Wir müssen handeln, sei es durch gesetzliche Vorgaben oder durch freiwillige Selbstverpflichtungen. We must act, be it through legal requirements or through voluntary commitments.
Don't mix it up
One verb-first opening, five meanings
The same verb-first start can mean five things. Punctuation, mood and particles tell you which.
| Sentence | Type | Mood and markers | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hätte er Zeit, käme er zum Fest. | Konditionalsatz (condition) | Konjunktiv II; two clauses; no particles needed. | "If he had time, he would come to the celebration." |
| Hätte er doch nur Zeit! | Irrealer Wunschsatz (optative wish) | Konjunktiv II; one clause; doch nur + ! | "If only he had time!" |
| Hatte er auch wenig Zeit, so kam er dennoch. | Konzessivsatz (concession) | Indikativ/Konjunktiv; auch + resumptive so/dennoch. | "Even though he had little time, he came nonetheless." |
| Hat er heute Zeit? | Entscheidungsfrage (question) | Indikativ; ends with ? | "Does he have time today?" |
| Nimm dir endlich Zeit! | Imperativsatz (command) | Imperative form; ends with ! | "Finally make time!" |
