Negating a sentence vs. one part

When you use it

   The whole action: nicht near the end

   • Ich komme nicht.I'm not coming.
   • Er arbeitet heute nicht.He isn't working today.

   The action is not happening at all? Put nicht near the end. With a second verb part, nicht comes just before it (→ S04).

   One part: nicht before that word

   • Wir treffen uns nicht heute, sondern morgen.We're not meeting today, but tomorrow.
   • Ich fahre nicht nach Berlin, sondern nach München.I'm not going to Berlin, but to Munich.

   You want to correct one detail, like a time, a place or a person? Put nicht right before it. Often sondern follows (K01).

   Decide what is not true

   Is the whole action not happening? Or is only one detail wrong – a time, a place, a person?

   • Ich arbeite heute nicht.I'm not working today. (the whole action)
   • Ich arbeite nicht heute, …I'm not working today, … (only the time is wrong)

   Put nicht in its place

   Whole action: nicht at the end, or just before a second verb part. One detail: nicht right before that word.

   • Ich kann heute nicht kommen.I can't come today.
   • Ich fahre nicht nach Berlin, …I'm not going to Berlin, …

   Add the correction

   Add a comma, sondern and the right detail.

   • Ich arbeite nicht heute, sondern morgen.I'm not working today, but tomorrow.

  You correct the time, so put nicht right before heute.

• ✕ Ich fahre nach Berlin nicht, sondern nach München.

  ✓ Ich fahre nicht nach Berlin, sondern nach München.

  You correct the place, so nicht goes right before nach Berlin.

• ✕ Wir treffen uns nicht am Mittwoch, aber am Donnerstag.

  ✓ Wir treffen uns nicht am Mittwoch, sondern am Donnerstag.

  After nicht, the correct option comes with sondern, not aber.
