Negation with nicht (A1) – German grammar

Put nicht near the end to deny the whole action, or right before one word: Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.

Put nicht right before the adjective.

Not this place, time or thing
- Ich wohne nicht in Leipzig.I don't live in Leipzig.
- Das ist nicht der richtige Schlüssel.That's not the right key.
Put nicht right before the place, the time or the noun with der, die, das. Often sondern gives the right detail.
Tip: sondern means "but" after a no: nicht heute, sondern morgen.

Common mistakes

~~Ich nicht arbeite heute.~~
Ich arbeite heute nicht.
The verb stays in position 2. nicht comes later.
~~Ich habe das Buch nicht gekauft gestern.~~
Ich habe das Buch gestern nicht gekauft.
gekauft is the last word. gestern goes before nicht.
~~Der Kaffee ist heiß nicht.~~
Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.
To deny an adjective, put nicht right before it.

Exceptions

Pronouns like ihn, sie, es come before nicht. A name after sein gets nicht in front. Never use kein with names.
- Ich kenne ihn nicht.I don't know him.
- Das ist nicht Maria.That's not Maria.
As in N04: ein-nouns and nouns without an article take kein. Nouns with der, die, das take nicht.
- Ich habe kein Auto.I don't have a car.
- Das ist nicht das Auto.That's not the car.

Don't mix it up

kein or nicht?

kein goes with nouns that have ein or no article. nicht goes with verbs, adjectives and nouns with der, die, das.
