Information order and emphasis
Bekanntes vor Neuem; Betonung im Text
Put known information first and new information last, or move a word to the front for emphasis: Ungelöst bleibt das Problem.
Neutral vs. marked order
| Field | Neutral order | Marked order | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vorfeld (position 1) | Known topic / subject (Der Minister …) | New focus, a contrasting object, an adjective or participle | Sudden contrast or suspense |
| Mittelfeld (start) | Unstressed pronouns, known nouns with der / die / das | Moved parts, small particles | Links closely to what came before |
| Mittelfeld (end) | Nouns with ein, the core of the statement | The main new point (Rhema) | Gets the natural sentence stress |
| Nachfeld | Usually empty (or comparisons) | A key argument or punchline | A strong final effect |
The main points
- Known information first, new information last.
- The end of the Mittelfeld or the Nachfeld carries most weight.
- An object in position 1 signals contrast.
- Ungelöst bleibt …: verdict first, verb second, subject later.
- Stack clauses before the main clause to build tension.
Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
Known first, new last
- Die Bundesregierung plant eine umfassende Reform des Rentensystems. Diese Reform stößt jedoch bei den Gewerkschaften auf erbitterten Widerstand. The government is planning a major pension reform. This reform, however, is meeting fierce resistance from the trade unions.
- Die Krise verschärft sich. Dieser Entwicklung steuern wir entgegen. The crisis is getting worse. We are working against this development.
Start each sentence with something the reader already knows (Thema). Put the new point (Rhema) at the end. The new point often becomes the next sentence's start.
💡 Tip: In everyday German, the subject usually comes first. Speeches and essays vary this on purpose.
- 2
Contrast: an object in position 1
- Den Bürgern muss die Politik reinen Wein einschenken, nicht den Lobbyverbänden. It is the citizens that politicians must tell the plain truth to, not the lobby groups.
- Einen solchen Kompromiss hätte die Parteispitze vor wenigen Monaten noch rundweg abgelehnt.A compromise like this the party leaders would have flatly rejected only a few months ago.
Normally the subject or a time phrase comes first. Put an object or a reason there instead, and it signals contrast: this, not something else.
- 3
Suspense: the verdict comes first
- Ungelöst bleibt das fundamentale Problem der gerechten Lastenverteilung. What remains unsolved is the basic problem of sharing the burden fairly.
- Erschütternd war vor allem die Gleichgültigkeit, mit der die Verantwortlichen auf die Warnungen reagierten. What was shocking above all was the indifference with which those responsible reacted to the warnings.
Put an adjective or participle first, then the verb (bleiben, sein, werden). The subject comes later, so the listener waits for it.
The forms
Neutral vs. marked order
Word order shows both the slots of the sentence and what matters most to the reader.
What to notice
The end carries the most weight (Endgewicht). Put what readers should remember at the end of the Mittelfeld or in the Nachfeld.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Decide what is known and what is new
Before each sentence, ask: what does the reader already know? That is the Thema. What is the new point? That is the Rhema.
- 2
Choose what goes in position 1
For smooth reading, start with the known part. For sharp contrast, start with the surprising or opposing part.
- Die Digitalisierung verändert unsere Arbeitswelt grundlegend.Digitalisation is fundamentally changing the way we work.
- Smooth: Dieser tiefgreifende Wandel verlangt neue Formen der Weiterbildung. This deep change calls for new forms of further training.
- 3
Order the Mittelfeld from light to heavy
Short pronouns and adverbs come first. Long noun phrases move towards the end, just before the final verb.
- ✗ Der Kanzler hat dem völlig überraschten Parlament gestern es erklärt.Wrong: the light pronoun es comes last.
- ✓ Der Kanzler hat es gestern dem völlig überraschten Parlament erklärt.The chancellor explained it yesterday to a completely surprised parliament.
- 4
Put the verdict first for emphasis
Take the adjective from the end and put it in position 1. The verb follows, and the subject comes after it.
- Die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich ist besorgniserregend. The gap between rich and poor is alarming.
- → Besorgniserregend ist die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich. What is alarming is the gap between rich and poor.
- 5
Build a periodic sentence
In a speech or a closing paragraph, stack two or three subordinate clauses. Then release the tension in the main clause.
- Erst wenn wir die ökologische Transformation als Chance begreifen, erst wenn Politik und Wirtschaft an einem Strang ziehen, und selbst wenn der Weg dorthin von Rückschlägen gesäumt sein mag: erst dann werden wir den Wohlstand künftiger Generationen sichern können.Only when we see the green transition as a chance, only when politics and business pull together, and even if the road there is full of setbacks: only then will we secure the wealth of future generations.

Common mistakes
✕
Ungelöst das Problem bleibt, weil die Parteien streiten.✓ Ungelöst bleibt das Problem, weil die Parteien streiten.
With Ungelöst in position 1, the verb bleibt must come second.
✕
Über diese Fragen es muss im Parlament debattiert werden.✓ Über diese Fragen muss im Parlament debattiert werden.
The placeholder es only fills an empty position 1. Here Über diese Fragen fills it.
✕
Der Kanzler erläuterte den Journalisten die Krise. Die Krise wurde von den Experten aber anders beurteilt.✓ Der Kanzler erläuterte den Journalisten die Krise. Diese wurde von den Experten jedoch anders beurteilt.

Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
An empty es can fill position 1 so the real subject comes later. It disappears as soon as anything else takes position 1.
- ✓ Es zogen finstere Wolken über der Stadt auf.Dark clouds gathered over the city.
- ✓ Über der Stadt zogen finstere Wolken auf.Over the city, dark clouds gathered. (No es: ✗ Über der Stadt zogen es …)
💡 Tip: Fixed verbs like es bedarf keep their es: Hier bedarf es keiner Erklärung.
Unstressed es, ihm, ihn or sie can't take the end position. They go to the start of the Mittelfeld. To stress es, use das instead.
- ✗ Gestern schenkte der Vater ein Buch ihm.Sounds wrong.
- ✓ Gestern schenkte ihm der Vater ein Buch. / Gestern schenkte der Vater ihm ein Buch.Yesterday the father gave him a book.
- Gestern sprach der Chef mit dem, nicht mit mir!Yesterday the boss spoke to him, not to me!
Inversion works because it is unexpected. If every sentence is inverted, the text sounds theatrical. Use it rarely, for example to open a section.
Speeches often list three parallel parts. One claim sounds firm, two sound balanced, three sound complete and convincing.
- Wir fordern Klarheit in den Zielen, Mut in den Entscheidungen und Konsequenz im Handeln. We demand clear goals, brave decisions and consistent action.
Don't mix it up
Information order vs. grammatical order models
Thema-Rhema is about what the reader already knows. TeKaMoLo and the field model are grammar rules. A cleft sentence picks out one part for emphasis.
| Concept | Type of rule | Main idea | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thema-Rhema (S20) | Style | Order by what is known, then new | Die Krise verschärft sich. Dieser Entwicklung [Thema] steuern wir entgegen. |
| TeKaMoLo / Mittelfeld rules (S11) | Grammar default | Usual order of time, reason, manner, place | Er fuhr [gestern] [wegen des Regens] [mit dem Zug] [nach Berlin]. |
| Field model (S17) | Sentence structure | The fields: Vorfeld, verb, Mittelfeld, verb, Nachfeld | [Vorfeld] [Verb 1] [Mittelfeld] [Verb 2] [Nachfeld] |
| Cleft sentence | Emphasis formula | Es ist X, der / die / das … | Es war der Bürgermeister, der den Stein ins Rollen brachte. |
- Neutral baseline (S11 + S17): Der Bund stellt den Kommunen heute wegen der Notlage finanzielle Mittel bereit. The federal government is giving the towns funds today because of the emergency.
- Thematic chaining (S20, linear): Die Kommunen leiden unter gravierenden Haushaltslöchern. Ihnen [Thema] stellt der Bund deshalb heute finanzielle Mittel bereit. The towns have serious budget gaps. That is why the federal government is giving them funds today.
- Marked contrast (S20, Vorfeld focus): Den Kommunen [marked focus] muss geholfen werden, nicht den multinationalen Konzernen! It is the towns that must be helped, not the multinational corporations!
- Predicate inversion (S20, rhetorical): Dringend geboten ist eine rasche Unterstützung der Kommunen. What is urgently needed is quick support for the towns.
