Conditional clauses without wenn
Bedingungssätze ohne wenn
Drop wenn and put the verb first: Haben Sie Fragen, rufen Sie uns an.
Real conditions
| With wenn (verb at the end) | Without wenn (verb first) | Main clause |
|---|---|---|
| Wenn Sie den Preis um drei Prozent senken, ... | Senken Sie den Preis um drei Prozent, | unterzeichnen wir den Vertrag. |
| Wenn wir uns heute einigen, ... | Einigen wir uns heute, | beginnt die Produktion am Montag. |
| Wenn Sie eine Anzahlung leisten, ... | Leisten Sie eine Anzahlung, | (so) reservieren wir das Kontingent. |
The main points
- Drop wenn and put the conjugated verb first: Haben Sie Fragen, …
- The subject comes right after the verb.
- With normal verbs, the condition comes first, not after the main clause.
- The main clause starts with its verb, or with so or dann.
- Use sollte for polite what-ifs, hätte or wäre for unreal ones.
Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
Real conditions in offers and contracts
- Erfüllen Sie die vereinbarten Lieferfristen, verlängern wir den Rahmenvertrag um ein weiteres Jahr.If you meet the agreed delivery deadlines, we will extend the framework agreement for another year.
- Zahlt der Auftraggeber nicht innerhalb von 14 Tagen, gerät er automatisch in Verzug. If the client doesn't pay within 14 days, they are automatically in default.
Instead of wenn, put the conjugated verb first. This sounds short and precise. It is common in negotiations, offers and contracts.
- 2
Polite what-ifs with sollte
- Sollten Sie Rückfragen zum Vertragsentwurf haben, steht Ihnen unsere Rechtsabteilung jederzeit zur Verfügung.Should you have any questions about the draft contract, our legal department is always there to help.
- Sollten unerwartete Verzögerungen auftreten, informieren wir Sie unverzüglich.Should there be unexpected delays, we will tell you immediately.
Sollte or sollten in first place means "should you …" or "in case …". It is the usual polite form in business letters and customer service.
💡 Tip: Sollte suggests you don't really expect it to happen.
- 3
Unreal conditions with hätte and wäre
- Wären Sie zu einer längeren Vertragslaufzeit bereit, könnten wir Ihnen bei den Stückkosten entgegenkommen. If you were open to a longer contract, we could meet you halfway on unit costs.
- Hätten wir die Verhandlungen im letzten Quartal abgeschlossen, wären die Rohstoffpreise deutlich günstiger gewesen.Had we finished the negotiations last quarter, raw materials would have been much cheaper.
For what-if ideas or regrets about the past, start with a Konjunktiv II form (the "would" form): hätte, wäre, könnte.
The forms
Real conditions
| With wenn (verb at the end) | Without wenn (verb first) | Main clause |
|---|---|---|

| Wenn wir uns heute einigen, ... | Einigen wir uns heute, | beginnt die Produktion am Montag. |
| Wenn Sie eine Anzahlung leisten, ... | Leisten Sie eine Anzahlung, | (so) reservieren wir das Kontingent. |
What to notice
The verb moves from the end to the front. The main clause then starts with its verb, or with so or dann.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Start with a wenn-clause
Take a normal condition with wenn. Its conjugated verb is at the end.
- Wenn Sie unsere Zahlungsbedingungen akzeptieren, ...If you accept our payment terms, ...
- 2
Drop wenn and move the verb
Delete wenn. Put the conjugated verb first and the subject right after it.
- → Akzeptieren Sie unsere Zahlungsbedingungen, ...If you accept our payment terms, ...
- 3
Start the main clause with its verb
The whole condition counts as position 1 of the sentence. So the main clause starts with its conjugated verb (→ S01).
- → Akzeptieren Sie unsere Zahlungsbedingungen, schließen wir das Geschäft ab.If you accept our payment terms, we will close the deal.
- 4
Add so or dann if you like
Formal German often puts so before the main verb; speech often uses dann. The verb comes right after them.
- Akzeptieren Sie unsere Zahlungsbedingungen, so schließen wir das Geschäft ab.If you accept our payment terms, (then) we will close the deal. (formal)
- Akzeptieren Sie unsere Zahlungsbedingungen, dann schließen wir das Geschäft ab.If you accept our payment terms, then we will close the deal. (spoken)

Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
A wenn-clause can stand before or after the main clause. With normal verbs, a condition without wenn comes first. Konjunktiv II is the exception: Ich wäre gekommen, hätte ich das gewusst.
- ✓ Stimmen Sie zu, unterzeichnen wir den Vertrag. If you agree, we will sign the contract.
- ✓ Wir unterzeichnen den Vertrag, wenn Sie zustimmen. We will sign the contract if you agree.
- ✗ Wir unterzeichnen den Vertrag, stimmen Sie zu.
With passive, Perfekt or modal verbs, only the helper or modal verb goes first. Participles and infinitives stay at the end.
- Wird das Protokoll heute nicht unterzeichnet, vertagen wir die Sitzung. If the minutes aren't signed today, we will adjourn the meeting.
- Müssen wir das Angebot kurzfristig überarbeiten, bitten wir um Fristverlängerung. If we have to revise the offer at short notice, we will ask for more time.
nicht stands where it always would: in the middle, before the verb parts at the end. kein stands in front of its noun.
- Können Sie die vereinbarte Menge nicht garantieren, müssen wir von dem Vorvertrag zurücktreten. If you can't guarantee the agreed quantity, we will have to withdraw from the preliminary contract.
- Besteht kein Interesse an einer Kooperation, beenden wir das Gespräch an dieser Stelle. If there is no interest in working together, we will end the conversation here.
Würden Sie … is common in speech. Formal writing prefers one-word forms like käme where they exist. With hätte, wäre and modal verbs, würde is almost never used.
- Würden Sie den Preis senken, würden wir sofort kaufen. If you lowered the price, we would buy immediately. (common)
- Kämen Sie uns beim Preis entgegen, würden wir sofort kaufen. If you met us halfway on the price, we would buy immediately. (more elegant)
Don't mix it up
V1 condition, yes/no question or imperative
All three start with the verb. A condition has a comma and a main clause. A question ends with a question mark. An imperative is an order.
| Sentence type | Position 1 | Punctuation and tone | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condition without wenn | Conjugated verb | Comma, then the main clause | If you do X, Y happens. |
| Yes/no question (Entscheidungsfrage) | Conjugated verb | Ends with ?; voice goes up at the end | Do you agree? |
| Imperative (Aufforderung) | Imperative form | Often ends with !; firm, falling voice | Sign the contract! |
- Unterschreiben Sie den Vertrag heute, (so) gewähren wir Ihnen den Sonderpreis. If you sign the contract today, we will give you the special price.
- Unterschreiben Sie den Vertrag heute? Are you signing the contract today?
- Unterschreiben Sie bitte den Vertrag noch heute! Please sign the contract today!

Verhandlungen über einen neuen Zulieferervertrag
Herr Schneider, head of purchasing, negotiates a new supplier contract with Frau Dr. Weber. · Tap EN for English.
- Herr Schneider
Guten Tag, Frau Dr. Weber. Wir möchten die Stückzahlen unserer Bestellung um 20 Prozent erhöhen.
- Herr Schneider
Bieten Sie uns dafür einen besseren Stückpreis, schließen wir das Geschäft noch in dieser Woche ab.
- Frau Dr. Weber
Guten Tag, Herr Schneider.
That's the whole topic.
