Emergencies and safety rules

In emergency instructions, wenn names the situation: a fire, an accident, a sudden illness.

- Wenn Sie den Notruf wählen, dann bleiben Sie bitte ruhig am Telefon.If you call the emergency number, then please stay calm on the phone.
- Wenn der Strom ausfällt, dann schaltet sich die Notbeleuchtung ein.If the power goes off, then the emergency lighting comes on.
Put dann (then) at the start of the main clause to stress the result. dann is optional.

Split your idea in two: the condition (what happens) and the action (what to do).

Verb to the end of the wenn clause
Start the condition with wenn, then the subject. The conjugated verb goes last.
- … wenn es in der Küche brennt.… if there is a fire in the kitchen.

Action first or condition first. If the condition comes first, the main clause starts with its verb, or with dann + verb.

In a wenn clause, the conjugated verb goes last.

Exceptions

You never need dann. It adds weight when you speak. Written rules often leave it out.
- Wenn es brennt, verlassen Sie das Haus.If there is a fire, leave the building.
In a wenn clause, a separable verb stays in one piece at the end: abschalten, not schalten … ab.
- Es ist sicherer, wenn wir den Strom sofort abschalten.It is safer if we switch off the power at once.
With a modal verb, the infinitive comes second to last. The modal verb takes the final spot.
- Wenn Sie das Gebäude schnell verlassen müssen, nehmen Sie die Treppe.If you have to leave the building quickly, take the stairs.
In notices and leaflets, wenn is sometimes dropped and the verb comes first. Emergency signs are often even shorter.
- Haben Sie Fragen, rufen Sie uns an.If you have any questions, call us.
- Im Brandfall Aufzug nicht benutzen.In case of fire, do not use the lift. (real sign, no verb at all)

Don't mix it up

wenn, als, ob or wann?

English if can be wenn or ob. Can you say whether? Use ob. Can you say in case? Use wenn. wann asks about time.
