Negation with kein (A1) – German grammar

Use kein before a noun that would have ein or no article: Ich habe kein Auto.

The main points

kein = no / not a, for nouns with ein or no article.
kein has the endings of ein: kein, keine, masculine Akkusativ keinen.
Plurals and words like Zeit take kein too: keine Zeit.

Nouns with ein or no article: kein
- Ich habe kein Auto.I have no car / I don't have a car.
- Wir brauchen keine neuen Stühle.We don't need any new chairs.
kein means "no" or "not a". Use it for nouns with ein, for plurals, and for things you can't count: Ich habe keine Zeit.

Everything else: nicht
- Herr Müller arbeitet heute nicht.Mr Müller is not working today.
- Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.The coffee is not hot.

What to notice

Only the masculine Akkusativ has -en: keinen. The others are kein or keine.

Das ist kein Stuhl.
A noun with ein is negated with kein, not nicht ein.
~~Ich habe nicht Hunger.~~
Ich habe keinen Hunger.
Hunger haben has no article, so it takes kein: keinen Hunger.
~~Ich arbeite kein heute.~~
Ich arbeite heute nicht.
arbeiten is a verb, not a noun. Verbs take nicht.

A noun with der, die, das, a name or a pronoun takes nicht, not kein.
- Das ist kein Buch.That isn't a book. (any book)
- Das ist nicht das Buch.That isn't the book. (a specific one)
For "not a", say kein. nicht ein is only for counting: "not one, but two".
- Das ist kein Stuhl.That isn't a chair.
- nicht ein, sondern zweinot one, but two
Fixed phrases with no article, like Hunger haben or Zeit haben, take kein.
- Ich habe keinen Hunger.I'm not hungry.
- Ich habe keine Zeit.I have no time.
