Someone says ein or eine + noun? Answer with the word alone. Masculine: einer or einen. Feminine: eine. Neuter: eins.

Saying there is none
- Haben Sie einen Termin frei? – Nein, heute ist keiner mehr frei.Do you have an appointment free? – No, there are none left today.
- Gibt es noch frische Brötchen? – Nein, es gibt keine mehr.Are there any fresh rolls left? – No, there are none left.
Use keiner, keine or keins to say there is none, or none left.

Plural: welche (some)
- Ich brauche Eier. Hast du welche?I need eggs. Do you have any?
- Wir haben keine Äpfel mehr. – Kein Problem, ich kaufe welche.We have no apples left. – No problem, I'll buy some.
Ein has no plural. So for plural nouns, and for things like Milch, say welche (some, any). The negative is keine.

What to notice

Neuter takes -s: eins, keins. The long forms eines and keines are also correct, mostly in writing.

What is its gender? What is its job: subject or object? Example: der Kuli (pen) as the object is Akkusativ.

Masculine object: einen, or keinen for no. Plural: welche, or keine for no. The table shows all forms.

Say the pronoun alone. Its ending shows which noun you mean.

Kuli is masculine and the object, so the pronoun is einen.
~~Hast du einen Stuhl? – Hier ist ein.~~
Hast du einen Stuhl? – Hier ist einer.
Stuhl is masculine and the subject here, so the pronoun needs -er: einer.
~~Hast du ein Auto? – Ja, ich habe eins Auto.~~
Hast du ein Auto? – Ja, ich habe eins.
The pronoun replaces the noun. Don't add Auto after eins.

einer, eine, eins have no plural. To say yes about plural nouns, use welche. It also works for Milch or Wasser.

Article ein or pronoun einer?

Article and pronoun mostly look the same. They differ in three places: ein Stuhl → einer, ein Buch → eins, Stühle → welche.
