Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Certain or uncertain?
Is it a routine or a sure thing? Use wenn. Is it a possible problem or a backup plan? Use falls.
- 2
Build the falls-clause
Start with falls, then the subject, then the other details. The conjugated verb goes last.
- falls der Zug auf Gleis 4 ausfällt
- 3
Add a comma and the main clause
Put a comma between the clauses. The main clause can come first or second.
- Wir nehmen ein Taxi, falls der Zug auf Gleis 4 ausfällt. We'll take a taxi in case the train on platform 4 is cancelled.
- 4
Falls first? Verb next
If the falls-clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb, then the subject.
- Falls der Zug auf Gleis 4 ausfällt, nehmen wir ein Taxi.If the train on platform 4 is cancelled, we'll take a taxi.
- 5
Modal verb? It goes last
With a modal verb (V05), the infinitive comes first and the modal verb goes to the very end.
- Falls Sie den QR-Code nicht scannen können, zeigen Sie die Buchungsnummer. If you can't scan the QR code, show the booking number.

Formal notices and emails often add sollte (V20). It shows the problem is unlikely.

- Im Falle eines Streiks wird der Fahrplan angepasst. In case of a strike, the timetable will be adjusted.
Don't mix it up
falls, wenn, ob or als?
All of these send the verb to the end, and several mean "if" or "when". Choose by how sure the event is.
| Word | Meaning | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| falls | in case | Possible problems and backup plans | Ich nehme eine Jacke mit, falls es kalt wird. |
| wenn (if) | if | Real conditions and causes | Wenn Sie die Taste drücken, öffnet sich die Tür. |
| wenn (when) | when / whenever | Sure future events and routines | Ich steige um, wenn der Zug in Hannover hält. |
| ob | whether | Yes/no questions inside a sentence | Ich frage am Schalter nach, ob der Zug Verspätung hat. |
| als (→ K04) | when (past) | One finished event in the past | Als ich am Bahnhof ankam, war der Zug schon weg. |
