damit and sodass
damit und sodass
damit gives a goal, sodass a result: Ich erkläre es, damit du es verstehst.
Goal (damit) vs. result (sodass, so …, dass)
| Connector | Question | Meaning | Real yet? |
|---|---|---|---|
| damit | Wozu? Mit welchem Ziel? | Goal, intention | Not yet – it's a plan |
| sodass | Mit welcher Folge? | Result, consequence | Yes – a real result |
| so … [adjective], dass | Wie sehr? Mit welcher Folge? | Result of a strong quality | Yes – a real result |
The main points
- damit: a goal. Needed when the two subjects are different.
- sodass: a real result that follows from the main clause.
- so + adjective …, dass: a result of a strong quality.
- After damit and sodass, the conjugated verb goes to the end.
- sodass never comes first. Same subject? um … zu is shorter.
Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
damit: the goal
- Die Projektleiterin teilt den Zeitplan, damit alle Teammitglieder die Fristen kennen. The project manager shares the schedule so that all team members know the deadlines.
- Ich schicke Ihnen die Unterlagen vorab, damit Sie sich vorbereiten können.I'm sending you the documents in advance so that you can prepare.
damit (so that) says what you want to achieve. You need it when the person who acts and the person who benefits are different.
- 2
damit first
- Damit keine Missverständnisse entstehen, fassen wir alle Vereinbarungen schriftlich zusammen. So that there are no misunderstandings, we put all agreements in writing.
Put the damit clause first to stress the goal. The main clause then starts with its verb.
💡 Tip: Same subject? um … zu is shorter, but damit + subject is also correct.
- 3
sodass: the result
- Zwei Entwickler wurden plötzlich krank, sodass sich der Release um eine Woche verzögert. Two developers suddenly got ill, so the release is delayed by a week.
- Die Anforderungen wurden kurzfristig geändert, sodass wir den gesamten Code überarbeiten mussten. The requirements changed at short notice, so we had to rework all the code.
sodass (so, with the result that) gives a real consequence, not a plan.

Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
A result can't come before its cause. The sodass clause always follows the main clause.
- Es gab technische Probleme, sodass wir den Release verschieben mussten. There were technical problems, so we had to postpone the release.
damit already expresses the goal. Don't add wollen or sollen. können is fine for a new ability.
- Ich erkläre das Projekt, damit du es verstehst.I'm explaining the project so that you understand it. (not: damit du es verstehen willst)
Both spellings are correct; sodass is more common. With an adjective (so knapp, dass), so and dass are always separate.
- Der Zeitplan war so knapp, dass wir Überstunden machen mussten. The schedule was so tight that we had to work overtime.
damit can also mean "with it" (P07). Then it's a normal sentence part: the verb doesn't go to the end.
- Ich helfe dir, damit du früher nach Hause gehen kannst.I'm helping you so that you can go home earlier. (conjunction)
- Hier ist das neue Werkzeug. Damit arbeiten wir ab morgen. Here's the new tool. We'll work with it from tomorrow.
Don't mix it up
