   nicht nur …, sondern auch

   • Ich übernehme nicht nur die tägliche Korrespondenz, sondern erstelle auch monatliche Abrechnungen.I not only deal with the daily correspondence but also prepare monthly statements.
   • Wir suchen eine Person, die nicht nur teamfähig ist, sondern auch eigenverantwortlich arbeitet.We're looking for someone who is not only a team player but also works independently.

   Means "not only … but also". The second point is stronger or more surprising than the first. Put a comma before sondern.

   weder … noch: neither … nor

   • Im bisherigen Betrieb gab es weder Aufstiegschancen noch faire Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten.At my last company there were neither chances of promotion nor fair training opportunities.
   • Ich habe weder unentschuldigte Fehltage noch Abmahnungen in meiner Personalakte.I have neither unexcused absences nor written warnings in my personnel file.

   Rules out two things at once. weder and noch are already negative, so don't add nicht, kein or nie.

   Choose the pair

   Two equal skills: sowohl … als auch. An extra, stronger point: nicht nur … sondern auch. Two things ruled out: weder … noch.

   Make both halves match

   Repeat the preposition after the second part. It sounds cleaner in writing.

   • Ich interessiere mich sowohl für das Marketing als auch für den Vertrieb.I'm interested in both marketing and sales.

   Check the comma

   Linking words or phrases: comma only before sondern. No comma with sowohl … als auch or weder … noch.

   • Ich organisiere nicht nur Meetings, sondern erstelle auch Protokolle.I not only organise meetings but also write the minutes.
   • Ich habe weder Zweifel noch Bedenken.I have neither doubts nor concerns.

   Check the verb

   If the pair links two subjects, choose singular or plural (see the table).

   • Sowohl meine Ausbildung als auch mein Praktikum haben mich geprägt.Both my training and my internship have shaped me.
   • Nicht nur die Aufgaben, sondern auch das Arbeitsklima hat mich überzeugt.Not only the tasks but also the working atmosphere won me over.
