Time words like nachdem, bevor and während send the verb to the end: Bevor Sie gehen, speichern Sie alles.

The main points

All seven time connectors send the verb to the end.
nachdem in the past: Plusquamperfekt, then Präteritum or Perfekt.
nachdem in routines: Perfekt, then Präsens.
bevor, während, bis, solange: usually the same tense in both clauses.
Time clause first? The main verb comes right after the comma.

When you use it

nachdem: after something is finished
- Nachdem der Techniker die Maschine repariert hatte, lief die Produktion wieder an.After the technician had repaired the machine, production started again.
- Nachdem Sie das Formular ausgefüllt haben, klicken Sie auf „Senden“.After you have filled in the form, click "Send".
The nachdem action is finished before the main action starts. Use one tense earlier: Plusquamperfekt for the past, Perfekt for routines.

bevor and während: before and while
- Speichern Sie alle Dokumente ab, bevor Sie den Computer herunterfahren.Save all documents before you shut down the computer.
- Während Herr Koch die Kunden berät, bereitet seine Kollegin die Verträge vor.While Mr Koch advises the customers, his colleague prepares the contracts.
bevor: the main action comes first. während: both happen at the same time. Both clauses usually have the same tense.

sobald: right after
- Sobald die Lieferung im Lager ankommt, prüfen wir die Lieferscheine.As soon as the delivery arrives at the warehouse, we check the delivery notes.
- Bitte rufen Sie mich an, sobald Sie die Testergebnisse erhalten haben.Please call me as soon as you have received the test results.
sobald (as soon as): the second action starts the moment the first one happens.

First the system makes a backup. Then the server restarts. A is finished before B starts: nachdem.

Choose the tenses
This is a daily routine. So: nachdem clause in the Perfekt, main clause in the Präsens.

Put nachdem at the start of the clause and the conjugated verb hat at the end.

Join it to the main clause
Time clause first? The main verb comes right after the comma. Time clause second? Normal order, then a comma.
- Nachdem das System ein Backup erstellt hat, startet der Server neu.After the system has made a backup, the server restarts.
- Der Server startet neu, nachdem das System ein Backup erstellt hat.The server restarts after the system has made a backup.

Common mistakes

Nachdem der Chef ins Büro gekommen war, begann die Besprechung.
Verb to the end, and for the past use the Plusquamperfekt: gekommen war.
~~Nachdem ich die Rechnung bezahle, schicken Sie mir die Ware.~~
Nachdem ich die Rechnung bezahlt habe, schicken Sie mir die Ware.
For present or future events, nachdem needs the Perfekt: payment is finished first.

After bevor, the verb goes to the end.

In casual speech, people often use the Präteritum after nachdem. In writing and in exams, use the Plusquamperfekt.
- Nachdem er angekommen war, trank er einen Kaffee.After he had arrived, he had a coffee. (standard German)
As conjunctions, seit and seitdem mean the same. seit can also be a preposition with Dativ; seitdem can also stand alone in position 1.
- Seit ich hier arbeite, lerne ich viel.Since I've been working here, I've learnt a lot.
- Seitdem arbeite ich hier.I've been working here since then.
bis names the moment the waiting ends. Don't add nicht.
- Wir warten, bis der Chef kommt.We'll wait until the boss comes. (not: bis der Chef nicht kommt)
während can also mean "whereas". The verb still goes to the end.
- Die Frühschicht beginnt um sechs Uhr, während die Spätschicht erst um vierzehn Uhr anfängt.The early shift starts at six, whereas the late shift doesn't start until two.
ehe means bevor. You may see it in manuals and legal texts.
- Ehe die Maschine gereinigt wird, muss der Netzstecker gezogen werden.Before the machine is cleaned, the plug must be pulled out.

Don't mix it up

Conjunction, preposition or adverb?

Look at what follows: a whole clause (conjunction, verb last), a noun (preposition), or the verb (adverb in position 1).

After	nachdem: Nachdem die Schicht geendet hatte, ging er.	nach (+ Dativ → R01): Nach der Schicht ging er.	danach (→ K06): Die Schicht endete. Danach ging er.
Before	bevor: Bevor die Arbeit beginnt, lüften wir.	vor (+ Dativ → R01): Vor der Arbeit lüften wir.	vorher (→ K06): Die Arbeit beginnt. Vorher lüften wir.
During / while	während: Während er telefoniert, tippt sie.	während (+ Genitiv → R06): Während des Telefonats tippt sie.	währenddessen: Er telefoniert. Währenddessen tippt sie.
Since	seitdem / seit: Seitdem er hier ist, hilft er.	seit (+ Dativ → R01): Seit seiner Ankunft hilft er.	seitdem (→ K06): Er kam an. Seitdem hilft er.
