Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
One moment in the past
- Ich habe meinen Führerschein gemacht, als ich 18 Jahre alt wurde.I got my driving licence when I turned 18.
- Als mein Sohn auf die Welt kam, war ich überglücklich. When my son was born, I was overjoyed.
Something happened once, at one time in the past? Use als.
- 2
One phase of life in the past
- Als ich ein Kind war, habe ich jeden Nachmittag draußen gespielt. When I was a child, I played outside every afternoon.
- Wir hatten einen großen Garten, als wir auf dem Land lebten. We had a big garden when we lived in the countryside.
A time of life that happened only once also takes als: your childhood, your school years, your time in another city.
- 3
Repeated events in the past
- Immer wenn ich als Kind krank war, hat meine Mutter mir Hühnersuppe gekocht.Whenever I was ill as a child, my mother made me chicken soup.
- Jedes Mal wenn wir Sommerferien hatten, sind wir an die Ostsee gefahren.Every time we had summer holidays, we went to the Baltic Sea.
Did it happen again and again in the past? Use wenn, often with immer or jedes Mal.
💡 Tip: Test: does "every time" fit? Then use wenn.
The forms
Decision table: als or wenn
Ask two questions. Is it in the past? Did it happen once or many times?
| Time | How often? | Word | Tense | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Past | Once (one event or phase) | als | Präteritum / Perfekt | Ich weinte, als mein Fahrrad kaputtging. |
| Past | Again and again | (immer) wenn | Präteritum / Perfekt | Immer wenn wir Zeit hatten, schwammen wir. |
| Present | Any event or habit | wenn | Präsens | Wenn mein Wecker klingelt, stehe ich auf. |
| Future | Any planned event | wenn | Präsens / Futur | Wenn ich die Prüfung bestehe, feiern wir. |
What to notice
There is no als in the present or future. You only choose when you talk about the past.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Past or not?
Present or future? Use wenn – you are done. Past? Go to step 2.
- Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich fertig bin.I'll call you when I'm finished. (future → wenn)
- 2
Once or many times?
For the past, try adding "every time". If it fits, use wenn. If not, use als.
- Als ich zehn Jahre alt war, …When I was ten, … (only once → als)
- Immer wenn es Freitag war, …Every time it was Friday, … (a routine → wenn)
- 3
Send the verb to the end
Both als and wenn send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause.
- … als ich zehn Jahre alt war.… when I was ten years old.
- … als wir in Frankfurt angekommen sind.… when we arrived in Frankfurt.
- 4
Check the main clause
Main clause first: its verb is in position 2. Als/wenn clause first: the main clause starts with its verb after the comma.
- Ich hatte Angst, als …I was afraid when …
- Als ich zehn Jahre alt war, hatte ich einen Hund. When I was ten, I had a dog.

Common mistakes
✕
Wann ich ein Kind war, habe ich in einem kleinen Dorf gewohnt.✓ Als ich ein Kind war, habe ich in einem kleinen Dorf gewohnt.
wann is only for questions. One phase in the past takes als.
✕
Als ich morgen nach Hause komme, rufe ich dich an.✓ Wenn ich morgen nach Hause komme, rufe ich dich an.
als is only for the past. The future takes wenn.
✕
Als ich klein war, ich hatte viele Haustiere.✓ Als ich klein war, hatte ich viele Haustiere.
After the als clause, the main clause starts with its verb.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
For repeated past events, add immer or jedes Mal to wenn. Then everyone knows it is a habit, not one event.
- Als ich die Tür öffnete, stand mein Bruder da.When I opened the door, my brother was standing there. (once)
- Immer wenn ich die Tür öffnete, bellte der Hund.Whenever I opened the door, the dog barked. (a habit)
Five years in Munich are many days. But they are one phase of your life, so German uses als.
- Als ich in Berlin studierte, hatte ich wenig Geld. When I was studying in Berlin, I had little money.
- Als meine Großmutter noch lebte, feierten wir alle Feste zusammen. When my grandmother was still alive, we celebrated all holidays together.
wann asks about a time. It also starts indirect questions (Ich weiß nicht, wann …). But it can't replace als or wenn in a time clause.
- Wann beginnt der Film? When does the film start?
- Ich weiß nicht, wann der Bus kommt.I don't know when the bus is coming. (indirect question)
- ✗ Wann ich ein Kind war … → Als ich ein Kind war …When I was a child …
Als Kind means "as a child". There is no verb and no comma. It means the same as als ich ein Kind war.
- Als Kind habe ich gern Schokolade gegessen. As a child I liked eating chocolate.
- Als Jugendlicher hatte ich lange Haare. As a teenager I had long hair.
Don't mix it up
als, wenn or wann?
All three mean "when". wann asks for a time. als tells about one event or phase in the past. wenn is for everything else, and also means "if".
| Word | What it does | Meaning | English hint | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| als | Joins two clauses | One event or phase in the past | "back when" | Als ich klein war, bauten wir Baumhäuser. |
| wenn | Joins two clauses | Repeated, present or future | "whenever", "every time" | Immer wenn Oma kam, brachte sie Kuchen mit. |
| wenn | Joins two clauses | Condition | "if" | Wenn du Zeit hast, hilf mir bitte. |
| wann | Question word | A time or date | "at what time?", "on what day?" | Wann hast du Geburtstag? |
