weil gives a reason and sends the conjugated verb to the end: Ich komme zu spät, weil der Bus Verspätung hat.

- Ich kann heute leider nicht zur Arbeit kommen, weil ich hohes Fieber habe.Unfortunately I can't come to work today because I have a high temperature.
When you are late or miss something, give the reason with weil.

Answering Warum?
- Wieso lernen Sie Deutsch? – Weil ich eine Ausbildung in Berlin machen möchte.Why are you learning German? – Because I'd like to do an apprenticeship in Berlin.
- Warum bist du heute so müde? – Weil unsere Nachbarn gestern eine laute Party gefeiert haben.Why are you so tired today? – Because our neighbours had a loud party yesterday.
Answer a Warum? (why?) question with the weil clause alone. The verb still goes to the end.

Reason first
- Weil das Wetter so schlecht ist, sagen wir den Ausflug in den Zoo ab.Because the weather is so bad, we're cancelling the trip to the zoo.
- Weil ich mich seit gestern nicht gut fühle, bleibe ich heute im Bett.Because I haven't felt well since yesterday, I'm staying in bed today.
Start with weil when the reason matters most. Then the main clause starts with its verb.

Main clause with the verb in position 2, then a comma. In the weil clause: subject after weil, conjugated verb at the very end.

Make a normal main clause with the verb in position 2. Put a comma at the end.

Write weil right after the comma. The subject usually comes right after weil.

This works with one verb, with the Perfekt (haben/sein + participle) and with a modal verb + infinitive.

In casual speech, people sometimes say weil, pause, and use main clause order. In writing and exams, always put the verb at the end.
- Ich kann heute nicht kommen, weil … ich habe keine Zeit.I can't come today, because … I haven't got time. (spoken only)
- … weil ich keine Zeit habe.… because I haven't got time. (written German)
In a weil clause, a separable verb stays in one piece at the end: aufsteht, not steht … auf.
- Er ist müde, weil er jeden Tag um fünf Uhr aufsteht.He's tired because he gets up at five every day.
A modal verb in the Perfekt has a special word order (B1). At A2, use the Präteritum: konnte, musste.
- … weil ich den Vertrag nicht unterschreiben konnte.… because I couldn't sign the contract. (A2)
- … weil ich den Vertrag nicht habe unterschreiben können.… because I wasn't able to sign the contract. (B1)

weil, denn or deshalb?

weil: reason, verb at the end. denn: reason, verb in position 2. deshalb: result (that's why), verb right after deshalb.
