Comparisons with als and wie (A2) – German grammar

Equal things take so … wie, different things take -er + als: so groß wie meine, größer als meine.

When you use it

Equal: so … wie
- Die Kaltmiete in dieser Straße ist so hoch wie im Stadtzentrum.The basic rent on this street is as high as in the city centre.
- Die neue Wohnung ist genauso groß wie unsere alte Wohnung.The new flat is just as big as our old flat.
Two flats or prices are the same? Use so … wie or genauso … wie with the basic form of the adjective.

More or less: -er + als
- Die Wohnung im Erdgeschoss ist deutlich dunkler als die Wohnung im Dachgeschoss.The ground-floor flat is much darker than the top-floor flat.
- Wir zahlen jetzt 200 Euro mehr als im letzten Jahr.We now pay 200 euros more than last year.
One thing is bigger, cheaper or louder? Put the adjective in the comparative (-er) and link the second thing with als.

Not as much: nicht so … wie
- Die Kaution für dieses Studio ist nicht so hoch wie erwartet.The deposit for this studio is not as high as expected.
- Der Stadtteil ist nicht so laut wie das Bahnhofsviertel.The area is not as noisy as the station district.
You can also say "less" with nicht so … wie. This is very common in everyday German.

The forms

Equal (wie) or not equal (als)

All patterns with so take wie and the basic form. Only the comparative takes als.

What to notice

With wie, the adjective has no -er: so groß wie. With als, it has the comparative form: höher als.

Equal, or not as much (nicht so)? You need wie. One thing has more or less? You need als.

Choose the adjective form
With wie, keep the basic form. With als, use the comparative with -er.
- so günstig wie / günstiger alsas cheap as / cheaper than
- hoch → höher, groß → größer

Put the words in place
so, genauso or nicht so stands before the adjective, wie after it. With als, als comes right before the second thing.
- Die Miete ist so günstig wie letztes Jahr.The rent is as cheap as last year.
- Die Miete ist günstiger als im Stadtzentrum.The rent is cheaper than in the city centre.

Check the case
The word after als or wie takes the same case as the thing it is compared with. Usually that is the subject.
- Mein Mitbewohner zahlt weniger Warmmiete als ich.My flatmate pays less rent than I do.

After a comparative like teurer, use als, not wie.
~~Die Nebenkosten sind so höher wie im letzten Jahr.~~
Die Nebenkosten sind so hoch wie im letzten Jahr.
With so … wie, use the basic form hoch, not höher.
~~Er zahlt jeden Monat mehr Miete als mich.~~
Er zahlt jeden Monat mehr Miete als ich.
You compare with the subject er, so use ich, not mich.

In casual speech in many regions, people say größer wie or billiger wie. In writing, at work and in exams, use als.
- Die Miete ist teurer als vorher.The rent is more expensive than before.
- ✗ Die Miete ist teurer wie vorher.(casual speech only)
Some people say als wie. Never use it in writing or exams. Use only als.
- ✗ Er verdient mehr als wie ich. → Er verdient mehr als ich.He earns more than I do.
If you compare two objects in the Akkusativ, the word after als or wie is also in the Akkusativ.
- Der Makler mag den neuen Mieter lieber als den alten Mieter.The estate agent likes the new tenant more than the old one.
In a weil-clause, the comparison can stand before the verb or after it at the end. After the verb is more common.
- …, weil die Miete hier höher als in Berlin ist.…, because the rent here is higher than in Berlin. (also correct)
- …, weil die Miete hier höher ist als in Berlin.…, because the rent here is higher than in Berlin. (more common)

als and wie have other meanings too: als = as (a job) or when (past), wie = how or such as.
