When you use it

   Polite questions with wann, wo, wie

   • Wann kommt der Bus? → Wissen Sie, wann der Bus kommt?When does the bus come? → Do you know when the bus comes?
   • Wie heißen Sie? → Können Sie mir sagen, wie Sie heißen?What's your name? → Could you tell me your name?

   Asking for a time, a place or a name? Put the question inside Wissen Sie …? or Können Sie mir sagen …? It sounds more polite.

   Yes/no questions with ob

   • Kommt er heute? → Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt.Is he coming today? → I don't know whether he's coming today.
   • Haben Sie Zeit? → Können Sie mir sagen, ob Sie Zeit haben?Do you have time? → Can you tell me if you have time?

   Can you answer the question with yes or no? Then use ob (whether / if).

   Start with a polite main clause

   Choose a start like Wissen Sie …, Können Sie mir sagen … or Ich möchte gern wissen …

   • Wissen Sie, …Do you know …
   • Ich möchte gern wissen, …I'd like to know …

   Add the question word or ob

   Keep the question word (wann, wo, wie). For a yes/no question, use ob.

   • Wo ist die Post? → …, wo …Where is the post office? → …, where …
   • Ist die Post offen? → …, ob …Is the post office open? → …, whether …

   Send the verb to the end

   The conjugated verb goes to the very end of the indirect question.

   • … wann der Bus kommt?… when the bus comes?

Common mistakes

• ✕ Wissen Sie, wann kommt der Bus?

  ✓ Wissen Sie, wann der Bus kommt?

  In an indirect question, the conjugated verb goes to the end.

• ✕ Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt.

  ✓ Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.

  For "whether" or "if" after a yes/no question, use ob, not wenn.

• ✕ Ich weiß nicht, kommt er heute.

  ✓ Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt.

  A yes/no question needs ob. Then the verb goes to the end.
