The main points

sehr, ziemlich, besonders, kaum and zu go right before an adjective.
They never take endings: ein sehr gutes Ergebnis.
sehr is for praise; zu means too much, a problem.
kaum already means almost not. Don't add nicht or kein.
leider, vielleicht or hoffentlich in position 1: the verb comes next.

For good work, use sehr (very) or besonders (especially, particularly).

Mild feedback: ziemlich and kaum
- Der Zeitplan war ziemlich knapp, aber wir haben es pünktlich geschafft.The schedule was quite tight, but we made it on time.
- In deinem Text gibt es kaum Rechtschreibfehler.There are hardly any spelling mistakes in your text.
ziemlich means quite or pretty. kaum means hardly or almost no.

A problem: zu
- Die Einleitung des Vortrags war etwas zu lang.The introduction of the talk was a bit too long.
- Die Frist für dieses Projekt ist einfach zu kurz.The deadline for this project is simply too short.
zu means too: more than is good. Unlike sehr, it almost always points to a problem.

Grading words (Gradpartikeln)

They stand right before an adjective or adverb and never take endings. Also possible: Das freut mich sehr, kaum Zeit, kaum verstanden.

What to notice

The adjective after them keeps its normal ending: ein sehr gutes Ergebnis, eine ziemlich schwere Aufgabe.

One adjective or the whole sentence?
Changing how strong one adjective is? Use sehr, ziemlich, zu, besonders or kaum. Giving your view of the whole fact? Use vielleicht, leider or hoffentlich.

Put the particle right before the adjective
Nothing comes between the particle and its adjective. This is also true before a noun.
- Dein Vortrag war besonders lebendig.Your talk was particularly lively.

Position 1 or after the verb
leider, vielleicht or hoffentlich in position 1? The verb comes next, then the subject. Or put the word after the verb.
- Leider können wir das Projekt nicht verlängern.Unfortunately, we can't extend the project.

Good or impressive: sehr or besonders. More than is good or allowed: zu.
- Das Design ist sehr modern.The design is very modern. (praise)

zu means too much, a problem. For praise, use sehr or besonders.

Exceptions

English says "You're too kind!" as praise. In German, zu means a real problem. One polite phrase is the exception: Das ist zu freundlich von Ihnen!
- Vielen Dank, Sie sind sehr freundlich!Thank you very much, you're very kind!
- Er ist zu nett für diese harte Verhandlung.He is too nice for this tough negotiation. (a drawback)
kaum already means almost not. In standard German, don't add nicht or kein.
- Ich habe kaum Zeit für eine Kaffeepause. (NOT: kaum keine Zeit)I hardly have time for a coffee break.
hoffentlich is an adverb, not the verb hoffen. It starts a normal main clause with the verb in position 2.
- Ich hoffe, dass alles klappt.I hope that everything works out.
- Hoffentlich klappt alles. (NOT: Hoffentlich, dass alles klappt.)Hopefully everything works out.
ziemlich goes before adjectives and adverbs, not straight before a noun. In casual speech people say ziemlich Hunger, but write viel / großen Hunger.
- Wir hatten ziemlich große Probleme. (NOT: Wir hatten ziemlich Probleme.)We had pretty big problems.
- Wir hatten ziemlich viele Probleme.We had quite a lot of problems.
With friends and colleagues, people often say echt, total or voll instead of sehr. In written feedback, use sehr or besonders.
- Das war echt gut gemacht!That was really well done!
- Der Test war voll schwer.The test was really hard.

Don't mix it up

sehr, viel, zu and hoffentlich vs. hoffen

sehr is about degree, viel about amount, zu means too much. hoffentlich is an adverb; hoffen is a verb and takes a dass-clause.
