Adjectives with -bar and -lich (B2) – German grammar

Add -bar to a verb to say it can be done, like English -able: Der Akku ist austauschbar.

The main points

-bar means "can be done": waschbar, lösbar, austauschbar.
With -bar, the vowel doesn't change: tragen → tragbar.
un-...-bar names flaws: unbrauchbar, unbezahlbar, unerreichbar.
-lich often means understandable or fragile: verständlich, zerbrechlich.
scheinbar: only looks true. anscheinend: probably true.

When you use it

- Das ist machbar. = Das lässt sich machen. = Das kann gemacht werden.That is doable. = That can be done.
- Der integrierte Akku des neuen Laptops ist leider nicht austauschbar.Unfortunately, the built-in battery of the new laptop can't be replaced.
-bar works like English -able: it says that something can be done to a thing. You can add it to almost any verb with an accusative object.
Tip: A -bar adjective is the one-word version of the passive alternatives from V27.

Flaws in reviews: un-...-bar
- Nach dem Sturz auf den Fliesenboden war das Gerät unbrauchbar.After falling onto the tiled floor, the device was unusable.
- Für Studierende sind die Reparaturpreise dieses Herstellers schlicht unbezahlbar.For students, this manufacturer's repair prices are simply unaffordable.
Reviews and complaints rarely say Das Gerät kann nicht repariert werden. They put un- in front of the -bar adjective. This is short and sharp.

Understanding and fragile things: -lich
- Die Menüführung des Smart-TVs ist für jeden Nutzer sofort verständlich.The smart TV's menu is easy for any user to understand right away.
- Das mitgelieferte Kaffeeglas ist extrem dünnwandig und daher sehr zerbrechlich.The coffee glass that comes with it has very thin walls and is therefore very fragile.
Some -lich adjectives from verbs describe how easy something is to understand, or how easily it breaks or goes off.

Forming -bar adjectives from transitive verbs

Take the verb, remove -en or -n, and add -bar. The vowel does not change: no umlaut.

Step by step

Check the accusative object
Before you add -bar, check that the verb can take an accusative object (→ N03).
- Man kann [den Akku] austauschen. → austauschbarYou can replace [the battery]. → replaceable
- Das Gerät gehört mir. → gehören takes the dative: no -bar formThe device belongs to me.

Find the stem
Remove -en or -n from the infinitive.
- waschen → wasch-
- bedienen → bedien-

Choose -bar or -lich
If something can be done to a thing, use -bar. For understanding or fragile things, check if a -lich word exists.
- wasch- + -bar = waschbar
- verstehen → verständlich; zerbrechen → zerbrechlich

Add un- if needed
To say the opposite, put un- in front.
- brauchbar → unbrauchbar
- verzeihlich → unverzeihlich

Add an ending before a noun
After sein, the adjective has no ending. Before a noun, it takes the normal adjective ending.
- Das Material ist abwaschbar.The material is washable.
- Das Gerät besitzt ein abwaschbares Gehäuse.The device has a washable casing.

Common mistakes

~~Der Akku dieses Smartphones ist nicht wechselich.~~
Der Akku dieses Smartphones ist nicht auswechselbar. (or: nicht austauschbar)
For "can be swapped", use -bar. wechselich does not exist.
~~Die Menüführung der Kaffeemaschine ist sehr bedienlich.~~
Die Menüführung der Kaffeemaschine ist intuitiv bedienbar.
bedienen gives bedienbar. bedienlich does not exist.
~~Die Kopfhörer sitzen bequem und sind sehr traglich.~~
Die Kopfhörer sitzen bequem und sind sehr angenehm zu tragen. (or: haben einen hohen Tragekomfort)
traglich does not exist. tragbar means portable. For comfort, say angenehm zu tragen.

Exceptions

Verbs without an accusative object usually can't take -bar: no laufbar, no schlafbar. A few words are exceptions.
- brennen → brennbarflammable
- scheinen → scheinbarapparent, seeming
- gehen → gangbar: ein gangbarer Wega workable path
Many -lich adjectives come from nouns. They don't mean "can be done". They describe time or character.
- der Monat → monatlichmonthly
- der Sport → sportlichsporty, athletic
scheinbar: it looks true, but it isn't. anscheinend: it seems true, and it probably is.
- Das Gehäuse besteht scheinbar aus Metall, ist in Wirklichkeit aber aus billigem Plastik.The casing seems to be metal, but really it's cheap plastic.
- Der Motor streikt; anscheinend ist die Sicherung durchgebrannt.The motor has stopped; apparently the fuse has blown.
You can say von jedem Laien repariert werden in a passive sentence. Before a -bar adjective, von + person often sounds clumsy, though you do hear it.
- ein leicht reparierbares Gerätan easily repairable device
Tip: Write ein leicht reparierbares Gerät, or use the full passive sentence.

Don't mix it up

-bar and -lich vs. -fähig, -wert, -sam

-bar: can be done. -lich: understanding or a natural tendency. -fähig: able to do something. -wert: worth doing. -sam: tends to do something.
