When you use it

   Following a law: gemäß + dative

   • Die Festsetzung der Einkommensteuer erfolgt gemäß dem geltenden Einkommensteuergesetz.Income tax is assessed under the current Income Tax Act.
   • Den ministeriellen Richtlinien gemäß können haushaltsnahe Dienstleistungen anteilig abgesetzt werden.Under the ministry guidelines, household services can be partly deducted.

   gemäß means "in accordance with" or "under". It shows that a decision follows a law, rule or contract. It usually stands before the noun, sometimes after it.

   Naming a source: laut and zufolge

   • Die abzugsfähigen Fahrtkosten belaufen sich laut Ihren vorgelegten Belegen auf 1.250 Euro.According to the receipts you sent, the deductible travel costs come to 1,250 euros.
   • Dem amtlichen Gutachten zufolge entspricht die Wertminderung der Immobilie nicht den tatsächlichen Marktdaten.According to the official valuation, the property's loss in value does not match the actual market data.

   laut cites a document, receipt or figure: "as per". zufolge reports what a report or expert says. It usually stands after the noun and takes the dative.

   💡 Tip: Without an article, laut takes no ending: laut Gesetz, laut Rechnung.

   The topic: bezüglich + genitive

   • Bezüglich der geltend gemachten Umzugskosten wird um Nachreichung weiterer Nachweise gebeten.Regarding the moving costs you claimed, please send further proof.
   • Die Einspruchsentscheidung bezüglich Ihres Bescheids für das Veranlagungsjahr 2024 steht noch aus.The decision on your objection to the 2024 tax notice is still pending.

   bezüglich means "regarding". Use it in subject lines and letters to name the exact issue. In letters it is often shortened to bzgl.

   Find the position

   Does the preposition stand before the noun or after it? zufolge, and sometimes gemäß, come after the noun.

   Choose the case

   bezüglich and zugunsten take the genitive. gemäß and zufolge (after the noun) take the dative. laut takes the dative, or no ending without an article.

   Check the endings

   Dative plural adds -n to article, adjective and noun. Masculine and neuter genitive add -s or -es to the noun.

   Pronouns with zugunsten

   With a pronoun, use zu + possessive + Gunsten: zu seinen Gunsten. Or use zugunsten von + dative.

   • zu unseren Gunsten / zu seinen Gunsten / zugunsten von ihnenin our favour / in his favour / in their favour

   Law or rule: gemäß. Document: laut. Topic: bezüglich. Expert or report: zufolge. Advantage: zugunsten.

  The zufolge phrase fills position 1. The verb hat comes right after it, without a comma.
