When you use it

Talking about things: darauf, dafür, davon

Use a da- word to point back to a thing or idea you already mentioned. Use it for things, not people.

- Worauf wartest du? – Auf den Bus.What are you waiting for? – The bus.
- Wofür interessierst du dich? – Für Autos.What are you interested in? – Cars.
Use a wo- word to ask about a thing: What … for? What … about?

da- and wo- words are only for things and ideas. For people, use the preposition + a pronoun: auf ihn, an sie.

Answers and statements: da- (darauf). Questions: wo- (worauf). For a person, ask with the preposition + wen or wem: Auf wen …? Mit wem …?

Add r before a vowel
If the preposition starts with a vowel, put an r in between.
- über → darüber, worüber
- an → daran, woran

Common mistakes

Wartest du auf den Chef? – Ja, ich warte auf ihn.
der Chef is a person. Use preposition + pronoun, never a da- word.

Wofür interessierst du dich?
für was is casual. In standard German, use wofür.
~~Ich warte dafür.~~
Ich warte darauf.
warten goes with auf, so the da- word is darauf.

Exceptions

To pick out one thing among several, often while pointing, use the preposition + der or dieser instead of a da- word.
- Nicht auf diesen Bus, ich warte auf den hier.Not for that bus – I'm waiting for this one here.
In casual speech you hear für was? or mit was? In writing and standard German, use wofür, womit.
- Wofür interessierst du dich?What are you interested in?
Accusative prepositions take wen, dative prepositions take wem.
- Für wen ist das Geschenk?Who is the present for?
- Mit wem sprichst du?Who are you talking to?
