When you use it

   General rules with man

   • Hier darf man nicht rauchen.You aren't allowed to smoke here.
   • Wie schreibt man diesen Namen?How do you spell this name?

   man means people in general, or "you" in rules. House rules and signs use it a lot.

   Someone or no one: jemand, niemand

   • Jemand wartet an der Haustür.Someone is waiting at the front door.
   • Niemand wohnt im Keller.Nobody lives in the basement.

   jemand means someone. niemand means no one. niemand is already negative, so don't add nicht.

   Something or nothing: etwas, nichts

   • Da liegt etwas auf dem Boden.There is something on the floor.
   • Ich sehe nichts im Flur.I can't see anything in the hallway.

   etwas means something, or a little. nichts means nothing. They never change their form.

   Person or thing?

   A person, or people in general? Choose man, jemand or niemand. A thing? Choose etwas, nichts or alles.

   Pick the meaning

   Rule: man. Someone: jemand. No one: niemand. Something: etwas. Nothing: nichts. Everything: alles.

   Use the er-form of the verb

   When man, jemand, niemand or alles is the subject, the verb takes the er-form (→ V01).

   • Jemand spricht.Someone is speaking.
   • Hier raucht man nicht.People don't smoke here.

   Verb in position 2

   The verb stays in position 2 (→ S01). The pronoun can come first, or right after the verb.

   • Niemand schläft jetzt.Nobody is sleeping now.
   • Jetzt schläft niemand.Nobody is sleeping now.

Common mistakes

• ✕ Hier darf Mann keine Fahrräder parken.

  ✓ Hier darf man keine Fahrräder parken.

  man (people) has one n and a small m. Mann means a man.

• ✕ Alles sind in Ordnung im Haus.

  ✓ Alles ist in Ordnung im Haus.

  alles means everything and is singular: ist, not sind.

• ✕ Im Keller wohnt nicht niemand.

  ✓ Im Keller wohnt niemand.

  niemand is already negative. Don't add nicht.

• man is not der Mann+
• No double negative+
• alles takes a singular verb+
• etwas can mean "a bit"+
• Spoken: was for etwas+
