Personal pronouns in the dative (A1) – German grammar

Use mir, dir, ihm, ihr … for a person in the Dativ, for example after helfen: Kannst du mir helfen?

Dativ pronouns: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen, Ihnen.
Use them for the person who gets something.
helfen, danken, antworten, gehören always take the Dativ.
After mit, bei, zu: mit mir, bei ihm.
Dativ pronoun before a noun object: Ich gebe dir das Buch.

When you use it

The person who gets or is helped
- Kannst du mir bitte helfen?Can you help me, please?
- Ich antworte dir später.I'll answer you later.
Someone gives, shows, answers or helps a person? That person takes a Dativ pronoun.

After Dativ verbs
- Das Buch gehört mir.The book belongs to me.
- Wie schmeckt es euch?How do you all like the food?
Some verbs always take the Dativ: helfen, danken, antworten, gehören, schmecken.

After mit, bei, nach, zu
- Kommst du mit mir in die Stadt?Are you coming into town with me?
- Ich wohne im Moment bei ihm.At the moment I'm staying at his place.
After a Dativ preposition, a person becomes a Dativ pronoun.

What to notice

uns and euch don't change. er and es both become ihm. Formal Ihnen always has a capital I.

Find the person
Who gets something, or who is helped or answered? Example: I am helping you.

Choose the Dativ form
Take the right pronoun for that person: du becomes dir.

Put it after the verb
The Dativ pronoun goes after the verb, before a noun object.
- Ich helfe dir.I'm helping you.
- Ich gebe dir das Buch.I'm giving you the book.

Common mistakes

Kannst du mir helfen?
helfen takes the Dativ. The Dativ of ich is mir.
~~Ich danke dich für die Hilfe.~~
Ich danke dir für die Hilfe.
danken takes the Dativ, so use dir.
~~Das Buch gehört ich.~~
Das Buch gehört mir.
gehören takes the Dativ, so use mir.

Exceptions

In English you say "help me". In German, helfen and danken take the Dativ, so learn them as Dativ verbs.
- Ich helfe dir.I'm helping you.
- Ich danke Ihnen.Thank you. (formal)
For something you do to yourself, like washing, use mich (→ V11). For something you get yourself, use mir.
- Ich kaufe mir einen Kaffee.I'm buying myself a coffee.

Don't mix it up

Akkusativ or Dativ pronoun?

Akkusativ (mich, ihn): the person is the direct object. Dativ (mir, ihm): the person gets something or is helped.
