When you use it
- 1
Names with a job or role
- Der Bescheid wurde von Herrn Weber, dem zuständigen Sachbearbeiter, persönlich unterzeichnet. The notice was signed in person by Mr Weber, the case officer in charge.
- Wir bitten Sie, das Dokument an Frau Dr. Brand, unsere geschäftsführende Direktorin, weiterzuleiten. Please forward the document to Dr Brand, our managing director.
In letters, people often add a job or role straight after a name. It shows who is responsible.
- 2
Places, offices and projects
- Die Bestätigung betrifft unsere Hauptfiliale, das zentrale Dienstleistungszentrum in Köln.The confirmation concerns our main branch, the central service centre in Cologne.
- Unser Hauptsitz befindet sich in Frankfurt am Main, dem führenden Finanzplatz des Landes. Our head office is in Frankfurt am Main, the country's leading financial centre.
Not only people: you can rename a place, a branch or a project in the same way.
- 3
A role with als
- Das Schreiben bevollmächtigt Herrn Fischer als unseren Rechtsanwalt. The letter authorises Mr Fischer as our lawyer.
- Die Geschäftsführung dankt Ihnen als langjährigem Mitglied unseres Beirats. The management thanks you as a long-standing member of our advisory board.
Use als to say in which role someone acts. In standard German, the als-phrase also takes the case of its noun.
💡 Tip: Herrn Fischer is accusative, so: als unseren Rechtsanwalt.
The forms
Loose apposition: same case as the noun
A loose apposition follows the noun and adds extra information. It stands between commas and takes the same case as the noun.
| Case of the head noun | Head noun (Bezugsnomen) | Apposition (enclosed in commas) | Rest of the sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | Herr Dr. Klein, | unser leitender Justiziar, | wird den Vertrag gegenzeichnen. |
| Akkusativ | Wir beauftragen Herrn Dr. Klein, | unseren leitenden Justiziar, | mit der weiteren Abwicklung. |
| Dativ | Die Unterlagen liegen bei Herrn Dr. Klein, | unserem leitenden Justiziar, | zur Prüfung vor. |
| Genitiv | Die Stellungnahme Herrn Dr. Kleins, | unseres leitenden Justiziars, | liegt diesem Schreiben bei. |
What to notice
The article and adjective show the case: unser, unseren, unserem, unseres.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Find the noun and its case
Find the noun you want to explain. Ask which case the verb or preposition needs.
- Die Kanzlei hat die Vollmacht an den Notar gesendet. → AkkusativThe law firm sent the power of attorney to the notary.
- 2
Choose what to add
Decide what extra information you want to give about the noun.
- unser langjähriger Rechtsbeistandour long-time legal adviser
- 3
Give it the same case
Change the article and the adjective to the same case. Here it is masculine accusative.
- unseren langjährigen Rechtsbeistand
💡 Tip: The noun itself often stays the same. The endings are on the article and adjective.
- 4
Put it between two commas
Put the apposition straight after the noun. If the sentence goes on, close it with a second comma.
- Die Kanzlei hat die Vollmacht an den Notar, unseren langjährigen Rechtsbeistand, gesendet. The law firm sent the power of attorney to the notary, our long-time legal adviser.
- 5
Genitive names: von is easier
After a name in the genitive, the apposition is genitive too. In everyday business German, people usually prefer von + dative.
- Die Kanzlei vertritt die Interessen Herrn Kleins, unseres Mandanten. The law firm represents the interests of Mr Klein, our client.
- Die Kanzlei vertritt die Interessen von Herrn Klein, unserem Mandanten. The law firm represents the interests of Mr Klein, our client.
