Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Find the two nouns
Noun 1 is the thing. Noun 2 is the owner. Example: die Telefonnummer (thing) and der Sachbearbeiter (owner).
- 2
Find the gender of noun 2
Der Sachbearbeiter is masculine singular. So the genitive article is des.
- des Sachbearbeiter…
- 3
Add the noun ending
Masculine and neuter nouns add -(e)s. Sachbearbeiter is long and ends in -er, so it takes -s.
- des Sachbearbeiters
- 4
Put the genitive after noun 1
The genitive phrase usually comes after the main noun. Feminine and plural nouns take der and no ending.
- die Telefonnummer des Sachbearbeitersthe caseworker's phone number
- die Adresse der Firmathe company's address
- 5
Names: add -s, no apostrophe
With a name, put the name first and add -s. If it ends in an s-sound, write only an apostrophe.
- Das ist Peters Pass. That is Peter's passport.
- Das ist Lukas’ Arbeitsvertrag. That is Lukas's employment contract.
