Step by step
- 1
Decide what to spotlight
What do you want to stress: the day, the topic or the people?
- Wir besprechen das Thema morgen. We'll discuss the topic tomorrow.
- 2
Choose the word
Not earlier than tomorrow? Use erst. Tomorrow and no other day? nur. Surprising, for example on a Saturday? sogar.
- 3
Put it before the target
Place the focus word directly in front of the part you want to spotlight.
- Wir besprechen das Thema erst morgen. We won't discuss the topic until tomorrow.
- Wir besprechen morgen nur dieses eine Thema.Tomorrow we'll discuss only this one topic.
- 4
Stress the next word
Keep the focus word light and unstressed. Stress the word that follows it.
- Wir haben erst um zehn Uhr Zeit.We aren't free until ten. (stress on zehn)
- Ich brauche nur fünf Minuten.I only need five minutes. (stress on fünf)

Common mistakes
✕
Der Termin ist nur um 15:00 Uhr. (meaning: not until 3 pm)✓ Der Termin ist erst um 15:00 Uhr.
For "not until", use erst. nur um 15:00 Uhr means at no other time.
✕
Ich habe erst 2 Euro in der Geldbörse, ich kann das Mittagessen nicht bezahlen.✓ Ich habe nur 2 Euro in der Geldbörse, ich kann das Mittagessen nicht bezahlen.
A fixed small amount, with no more coming: use nur.
✕
Es ist noch früh, wir haben nur 9:00 Uhr.✓ Es ist noch früh, wir haben erst 9:00 Uhr.
For an early time, use erst, often with noch.

Before a noun, selbst means "even". After a noun, pronoun or verb, it means "myself, himself", without help, like selber.
- Selbst der Teamleiter wusste keine Lösung.Even the team leader didn't know a solution.
- Der Teamleiter hat die E-Mail selbst geschrieben. The team leader wrote the email himself.
erst recht means "all the more": a reason has become even stronger.
- Wenn der Kunde unzufrieden ist, müssen wir uns erst recht anstrengen. If the client is unhappy, we have to try all the harder.
This pair means "not only … but also".
- Wir haben nicht nur die Frist eingehalten, sondern auch Kosten gespart. We not only met the deadline but also saved money.
erst wenn means "only when, not until". If the main clause comes first, erst stays in it: Wir entscheiden erst, wenn …
- Erst wenn alle Teammitglieder zugestimmt haben, treffen wir eine Entscheidung.Only when everyone in the team has agreed will we make a decision.
erst gar nicht means "not even in the first place".
- Diesen Entwurf sollten wir der Abteilungsleitung erst gar nicht zeigen. We shouldn't even show this draft to the department heads in the first place.
Don't mix it up
nur, erst, selbst, sogar and their look-alikes
These pairs are often confused. Look at the meaning and the position of the word.
| Word pair | Difference | Clear examples |
|---|---|---|
| nur vs. erst | nur = a fixed limit / amount / only this. erst = a point in time / more will come later. | Ich trinke nur einen Kaffee. (That is all I want.) Ich habe erst einen Kaffee getrunken. (More will follow during the day.) |
| selbst (focus) vs. selbst (intensifier) | The focus particle stands before the noun ("even"). The intensifier stands after the pronoun/noun ("myself / alone"). | Selbst der Abteilungsleiter hilft mit. (Even the manager helps.) Der Abteilungsleiter unterschreibt selbst. (The manager signs personally.) |
| erst vs. zuerst | erst = focus particle ("only / not until"). zuerst = time adverb meaning "first of all" in a chronological list. | Der Zug kommt erst in 20 Minuten. (The train comes only in 20 min.) Zuerst frühstücken wir, dann arbeiten wir. (First we eat, then we work.) |
| sogar vs. auch | auch = simple neutral addition ("also / too"). sogar = surprising, extreme addition ("even"). | Klaus kommt auch. (Normal addition: Klaus is coming too.) Sogar Klaus kommt. (Surprise: Klaus usually avoids meetings, but he is coming!) |

In the office, Julia and Patrick plan their presentation for tomorrow's client meeting. · Tap EN for English.
- Julia
Hallo Patrick, wie sieht es mit unserer Präsentation für die Baugesellschaft Süd aus?
- Patrick
Ich muss nur noch die Grafiken auf Seite vier aktualisieren.
- Julia
Sehr gut. Wann beginnt das Treffen morgen eigentlich genau?
- Patrick
Der Kunde kommt erst um 14:30 Uhr. Wir müssen also nicht hetzen.
- Julia
Das passt mir gut. Ich habe heute Morgen nämlich erst zwei von vier Abschnitten im Bericht Korrektur gelesen.
- Julia
Weiß Herr Wagner schon Bescheid?
- Patrick
Ja, sogar unser Geschäftsführer nimmt morgen an dem Termin teil.
- Julia
Beeindruckend! Wenn selbst Herr Wagner dabei ist, sollten wir erst recht perfekt vorbereitet sein.
That's the whole topic.
