Restrictive connectors
insofern als, außer wenn
Limit a rule with insofern or außer wenn: Hunde sind verboten, außer wenn der Vermieter zustimmt.
Overview of restrictive subordinating connectors
| Connector | Meaning | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| insofern (als) | to the extent that | Zulässig, insofern der Vermieter zustimmt. | Allowed, as far as the landlord agrees. |
| insoweit (als) | in so far as (formal) | Gültig, insoweit das Gesetz es vorsieht. | Valid, in so far as the law provides for it. |
| außer wenn | unless, except if | Untersagt, außer wenn ein Notfall vorliegt. | Not allowed, unless there is an emergency. |
| außer dass | except that | Alles renoviert, außer dass die Tür klemmt. | Everything renovated, except that the door sticks. |
The main points
- insofern (als): true only up to a point. Verb at the end.
- insoweit is a formal variant; contracts more often use soweit.
- außer wenn = unless: a condition that cancels the rule.
- außer dass = except that: a real fact that is different.
- After es sei denn, usually a main clause follows: verb second.

When you use it
- 1
Only up to a point: insofern (als)
- Die Tierhaltung in der Mietwohnung ist gestattet, insofern als andere Hausbewohner dadurch nicht belästigt werden.Pets are allowed in the flat as long as they don't disturb other residents.
- Der Vermieter darf die Kaution einbehalten, insofern noch offene Betriebskostenforderungen ausstehen. The landlord may keep the deposit as far as service charges are still unpaid.
insofern (als) means "to the extent that": the statement is only true under this condition. You can write insofern als, insofern, als or just insofern.
- 2
insoweit: the formal variant
- Der Mieter haftet für Schäden an den Parkettböden, insoweit diese über die gewöhnliche Abnutzung hinausgehen. The tenant is liable for damage to the parquet floors where it goes beyond normal wear and tear.
- Die Hausordnung bindet die Vertragsparteien nur, insoweit als sie den Bestimmungen des Mietvertrags nicht widerspricht. The house rules only bind both parties as far as they don't contradict the lease.
insoweit works like insofern but sounds more formal and legal. In contract law, the shorter soweit is more common; insoweit is a formal variant.
- 3
Unless: außer wenn
- Das Abstellen von Fahrrädern im Hausflur ist untersagt, außer wenn der Vermieter dafür eine ausdrückliche schriftliche Genehmigung erteilt hat.Leaving bikes in the hallway is not allowed unless the landlord has given written permission.
- Der Vermieter darf die Wohnung ohne vorherige Ankündigung nicht betreten, außer wenn akute Gefahr im Verzug ist.The landlord may not enter the flat without notice unless there is immediate danger.
außer wenn names a condition that cancels the rule in the main clause. It means "unless" or "except if".
The forms
Overview of restrictive subordinating connectors
All four send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause.
What to notice
insofern and insoweit can stand alone, without als. Adding als sounds a little more formal.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Choose the kind of limit
A limit or scope (only up to here): insofern or insoweit. A condition that cancels the rule: außer wenn. A real exception: außer dass.
- 2
Verb at the end
Put the connector after the comma. The conjugated verb goes to the end of its clause.
- Der Mieter darf die Wände streichen, insofern er helle Farben verwendet. The tenant may paint the walls as long as he uses light colours.
- Das Grillen auf dem Balkon ist nicht erlaubt, außer wenn ein Elektrogrill genutzt wird.Barbecues on the balcony are not allowed unless an electric grill is used.
- 3
Use a comma
Always put a comma before the clause. With insofern als, a second comma is also correct: insofern, als.
- ..., insofern als der Vermieter einwilligt...., as far as the landlord agrees.
- ..., insofern, als der Vermieter einwilligt...., as far as the landlord agrees.

Common mistakes
✕
Das Halten von Hunden ist verboten, außer wenn der Vermieter erlaubt es ausdrücklich.✓ Das Halten von Hunden ist verboten, außer wenn der Vermieter es ausdrücklich erlaubt.
außer wenn sends the conjugated verb to the end.
✕
Die Renovierungspflicht entfällt, außer dass der Mieter grobe Schäden verursacht hat.✓ Die Renovierungspflicht entfällt, außer wenn der Mieter grobe Schäden verursacht hat.
This is a condition, not a fact. Use außer wenn.
✕
Insofern die Heizung repariert ist, die Mieter zahlen die volle Miete wieder.✓ Insofern die Heizung repariert ist, zahlen die Mieter die volle Miete wieder.
The insofern-clause fills position 1, so the main clause starts with its verb.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
insofern can also be an adverb meaning "in that respect". Then it often stands first and the verb comes right after it.
- Der Vermieter hat keine Begründung angegeben. Insofern ist die Kündigung unwirksam. The landlord gave no reason. In that respect, the notice is invalid.
Both mean "unless". After außer wenn, the verb goes last. After es sei denn, a main clause usually follows, verb second. With dass, it goes last.
- Sie müssen die Wohnung streichen, außer wenn Sie anderslautende Vereinbarungen getroffen haben. You have to paint the flat unless you have agreed otherwise.
- Sie müssen die Wohnung streichen, es sei denn, Sie haben anderslautende Vereinbarungen getroffen. You have to paint the flat unless you have agreed otherwise.
When the person is already named in the main clause, außer + zu-infinitive can replace a full clause.
- Dem Mieter bleibt nichts übrig, außer die Nachzahlung zu leisten. The tenant has no choice except to pay the extra amount.
Before a noun without a verb, außer is a preposition and takes the dative.
- Alle Mieter außer dem Hausmeister waren anwesend. All the tenants except the caretaker were there.
Don't mix it up
Restrictive, hypothetical and question connectors
These look similar but do different jobs. Only es sei denn is usually followed by a main clause. inwiefern asks a question.
| Connector | Verb position | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| insofern (als) / insoweit | at the end | to the extent that | Gültig, insofern keine Einwände bestehen. |
| außer wenn | at the end | unless | Verboten, außer wenn Notfälle eintreten. |
| es sei denn (→ K14) | position 2 (with dass: at the end) | unless | Verboten, es sei denn, ein Notfall liegt vor. |
| außer dass | at the end | except that | Alles bezahlt, außer dass fünf Euro fehlen. |
| inwiefern | at the end | in what way, how far (a question) | Wir prüfen, inwiefern die Klausel rechtens ist. |

In real life
Going through the lease clauses
Frau Meier goes through the clauses of her new lease in Cologne with Herr Krause from the housing association. · Tap EN for English.
- Frau Meier
That's the whole topic.
