Formal concession
wenngleich, obgleich, nichtsdestotrotz
In formal writing, obgleich and wenngleich replace obwohl, and dennoch replaces trotzdem: Er kam, obgleich er krank war.
Subordinating conjunctions (Nebensatz: Verb am Ende)
| Connector | Tone | Word order | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| obgleich | Very formal, written | Verb at the very end | ..., obgleich die Zahlen gegen ihn sprechen. |
| wenngleich | Formal, limits a point | Verb at the very end | ..., wenngleich das Ergebnis noch aussteht. |
| wenngleich (short form) | Formal shorthand in newspapers | No verb: just a phrase | ..., wenngleich unter strengen Auflagen. |
The main points
- obgleich = formal obwohl. The verb goes to the end.
- wenngleich limits a point and also works without a verb.
- dennoch = formal trotzdem: position 1 plus verb, or inside the clause.
- nichtsdestotrotz works like dennoch but sounds stronger.
- Never put a comma after dennoch or nichtsdestotrotz in position 1.

When you use it
- 1
obgleich: a formal obwohl
- Obgleich die Inflationsrate spürbar gesunken ist, verharren die Lebensmittelpreise auf einem historischen Höchststand.Although inflation has clearly fallen, food prices stay at a record high.
- Viele Fachkräfte wandern weiterhin ab, obgleich deutsche Unternehmen attraktive Einstiegsgehälter anbieten. Many skilled workers keep leaving, even though German companies offer attractive starting salaries.
obgleich means "although". It works exactly like obwohl: the verb goes to the end. You find it in serious newspapers, reviews and formal letters.
💡 Tip: In everyday speech, obwohl is the normal word.
- 2
wenngleich: admitting a smaller point
- Der Artikel liefert eine treffende Analyse der Wohnungsnot, wenngleich die vorgeschlagenen Lösungen etwas naiv wirken. The article analyses the housing shortage well, although the proposed solutions seem rather naive.
- Die Maßnahme ist ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung, wenngleich mit erheblicher Verspätung. The measure is a step in the right direction, albeit a very late one.
wenngleich also means "although". It often adds a limit: you agree with the main point but admit a weak spot. It also works without a verb.
- 3
dennoch: a formal trotzdem
- Die Tarifverhandlungen verliefen extrem zäh und von Misstrauen geprägt. Dennoch einigten sich die Spitzenverbände kurz vor Mitternacht. The pay talks were very tough and full of distrust. Nevertheless, the main associations agreed shortly before midnight.
- Es fehlt an finanziellen Mitteln und qualifiziertem Personal. Wir halten dennoch am ursprünglichen Zeitplan fest.We lack money and qualified staff. Yet we are sticking to the original schedule.
dennoch means "nevertheless" or "yet". It links two main clauses. The second point still stands, despite the first.
The forms
Subordinating conjunctions (Nebensatz: Verb am Ende)
There are two groups. The conjunctions obgleich and wenngleich start a subordinate clause (Nebensatz) and send the verb to the end.
What to notice
In older texts you may meet obschon or obzwar. They work the same way.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
One sentence or two?
Want one flowing sentence? Use obgleich or wenngleich. Want to state the point, stop, and then answer it? Use dennoch or nichtsdestotrotz.
- 2
obgleich / wenngleich: verb at the end
Put the conjugated verb at the end of the clause. If this clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.
- Viele Menschen wollen in die Stadt, obgleich die Mieten rasant steigen. Many people want to move to the city, although rents are rising fast.
- Obgleich die Mieten rasant steigen, ziehen viele Menschen in die Stadt.Although rents are rising fast, many people are moving to the city.
- 3
wenngleich as a shortcut
To add a short limit, put wenngleich right before an adjective, adverb or phrase. No subject, no verb.
- Er hat die Prüfung bestanden, wenngleich nur knapp. He passed the exam, albeit only just.
- Das Projekt war erfolgreich, wenngleich mit hohen Kosten verbunden. The project was a success, albeit at high cost.
- 4
dennoch / nichtsdestotrotz: verb next
In position 1, the adverb is followed directly by the verb, then the subject. Or put dennoch inside the clause.
- Die Gewerkschaft hat zu Streiks aufgerufen. Dennoch fuhren einige Züge planmäßig ab.The union called for strikes. Nevertheless, some trains left on time.
- Die Gewerkschaft hat zu Streiks aufgerufen. Einige Züge fuhren dennoch planmäßig ab.The union called for strikes. Some trains still left on time.

Common mistakes
✕
Obgleich der Zug hatte Verspätung, kamen wir pünktlich an.✓ Obgleich der Zug Verspätung hatte, kamen wir pünktlich an.
obgleich starts a subordinate clause, so the verb hatte goes to the end.
✕
Nichtsdestotrotz, die Regierung hält an dem Gesetz fest.✓ Nichtsdestotrotz hält die Regierung an dem Gesetz fest.
No comma after nichtsdestotrotz. The verb hält comes right after it.
✕
Obwohl die Kritik berechtigt ist, dennoch wurde der Vorschlag angenommen.✓ Obwohl die Kritik berechtigt ist, wurde der Vorschlag dennoch angenommen. (or: Die Kritik ist berechtigt; dennoch wurde der Vorschlag angenommen.)
The obwohl clause already fills position 1. Put dennoch after the verb, or drop it.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
Some purists dislike nichtsdestotrotz, but it is accepted and very common in the media. In laws and court judgments, dennoch or nichtsdestoweniger is better style.
In elevated prose, wenn opens the clause and auch stands inside it. It means the same as wenngleich. Many style guides see „wenngleich auch“ as doubled.
- Wenn die Risiken auch beträchtlich sind, wagen wir das Experiment.Even though the risks are considerable, we are going ahead with the experiment.
- Er unterstützte die Initiative, wenn er auch persönliche Bedenken äußerte. He supported the initiative, even though he had personal doubts.
Unlike English, German puts no comma after an adverb in position 1. The verb follows straight away.
- ✗ Dennoch, haben wir uns geeinigt.Wrong: English punctuation.
- ✓ Dennoch haben wir uns geeinigt.Nevertheless, we reached an agreement.
Older texts sometimes split wenngleich into wenn ... gleich. It means the same. You only need to recognise it.
- Wenn er gleich kein Experte war, gab er nicht auf.Although he was no expert, he did not give up.
wenngleich often works without a verb: wenngleich verspätet. obgleich almost always needs a full clause with a subject and a verb.
- ✓ wenngleich verspätetalbeit late (normal)
- ? obgleich verspätetrare, often sounds incomplete
Don't mix it up
Concession, contrast or preposition?
Concession means a result you would not expect. Contrast only compares two different facts. trotz is a preposition: it takes a noun, not a clause.
| Connector | Grammatical class | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| obgleich / wenngleich | Conjunction | Concession ("even though") | Obgleich es regnet, gehen wir raus. |
| während | Conjunction | Contrast ("whereas") or time ("while") | Peter spart, während Paul alles ausgibt. |
| dennoch / nichtsdestotrotz | Adverb | Concession ("nevertheless") | Es regnet. Dennoch gehen wir raus. |
| dagegen / hingegen | Adverb | Plain contrast ("on the other hand") | Im Norden regnet es; im Süden dagegen scheint die Sonne. |
| trotz (+ Genitiv) | Preposition | Concession with a noun ("despite") | Trotz des Regens gehen wir raus. |
- Die Mieten sind astronomisch. Dennoch ziehen die Menschen nach München.Rents are sky-high. Nevertheless, people move to Munich. (surprising result)
- In Berlin steigen die Mieten rasant; in ländlichen Regionen hingegen sinken sie.In Berlin rents are rising fast; in rural areas, on the other hand, they are falling. (plain contrast)
