When you use it

   Two things rise or fall together

   • Je länger die Energiekrise andauert, desto stärker steigen die Lebenshaltungskosten in deutschen Großstädten.The longer the energy crisis lasts, the faster the cost of living rises in big German cities.
   • Je früher junge Berufstätige mit der privaten Altersvorsorge beginnen, umso höher fällt ihre spätere monatliche Rente aus.The earlier young workers start a private pension, the higher their monthly pension will be later.

   Use je … desto or je … umso when one change leads to another. Both parts need a comparative (länger, höher, besser).

   One goes up, the other goes down

   • Je höher die Zinsen für Baukredite klettern, desto weniger Wohnungen werden von privaten Bauherren errichtet.The higher interest rates on building loans climb, the fewer flats private builders put up.
   • Je weniger bürokratische Hürden ein Start-up überwinden muss, desto schneller kann ein neues Produkt auf den Markt kommen.The less red tape a start-up has to deal with, the faster a new product can reach the market.

   The two changes can go in opposite directions. Combine mehr, höher or besser with weniger, geringer or niedriger.

   Main clause first

   • Mitarbeiter arbeiten desto produktiver, je mehr Eigenverantwortung ihnen die Führungskraft überträgt.Staff work all the more productively, the more responsibility their manager gives them.
   • Der Fachkräftemangel wird für den Mittelstand umso spürbarer, je mehr erfahrene Mitarbeiter in den Ruhestand gehen.The skills shortage hits medium-sized firms all the harder, the more experienced staff retire.

   You can also start with the main clause to stress the result. desto or umso stays in the main clause; the je-clause follows after a comma.

1. 1

   Make two comparatives

   Find the cause and the result. Put both adjectives or adverbs into the comparative.

   • stark → stärker; effizient → effizienterstrong → stronger; efficient → more efficient

   Build the je-clause

   Start with je, put the first comparative right after it, and send the conjugated verb to the end.

   • Je stärker Unternehmen ihre Prozesse digitalisieren, ...The more companies digitalise their processes, ...
3. 3

   Build the desto-clause

   Start with desto or umso plus the second comparative. The conjugated verb comes next, then the subject.

   • ... desto effizienter arbeitet die Verwaltung.... the more efficiently the administration works.

   Keep the noun with its comparative

   A noun stays right after its comparative. Adjectives take an ending (qualifiziertere Fachkräfte); mehr and weniger don't.

   • Je qualifiziertere Fachkräfte der Betrieb einstellt, desto ...The more highly qualified staff the company hires, the ...

   Join with a comma

   Always put a comma between the two clauses.

   • Je stärker Unternehmen ihre Prozesse digitalisieren, desto effizienter arbeitet die Verwaltung.The more companies digitalise their processes, the more efficiently the administration works.

Common mistakes

• ✕ Je mehr man spart, desto man fühlt sich unabhängiger.

  ✓ Je mehr man spart, desto unabhängiger fühlt man sich.

  The comparative goes right after desto. Then comes the verb.

• ✕ Je steigen die Mieten, desto schwieriger wird das Leben.

  ✓ Je höher die Mieten steigen, desto schwieriger wird das Leben.

  je needs a comparative right after it. The verb goes to the end.

• ✕ Je früher man bucht, als günstiger ist das Ticket.

  ✓ Je früher man bucht, desto günstiger ist das Ticket.

  The second part starts with desto or umso, not als or wie.
