Linking letters in compounds (B2) – German grammar

Some compounds need a linking letter between the parts, for example after -ung: die Wohnungssuche.

The main points

After -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tion, -tät: always -s-.
Some feminine nouns also take -s-: Geburtsdatum, Arbeitserlaubnis.
Feminine -e and weak nouns: often -n- or -en- (Straßenname, Studentenausweis).
Nouns with an -er plural often take -er-: Kindergeld.
Short nouns usually join with nothing: Passbild, Briefumschlag.

If the first word ends in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tion or -tät, you always add -s- (das Fugen-s). The second word doesn't matter.

-s- after some feminine nouns
- Bitte geben Sie Ihr genaues Geburtsdatum und Ihren Geburtsort an.Please give your exact date and place of birth.
- Eine Kopie Ihrer Arbeitserlaubnis liegt dem Antrag bei.A copy of your work permit is attached to the application.
A few common feminine nouns also take -s-: Geburt, Arbeit, Hilfe. This -s- is not a genitive. It only joins the two parts.
Tip: die Hilfe drops its -e: Hilfsorganisation.

-n- or -en- after -e
- Fügen Sie dem Antrag eine Kopie Ihres aktuellen Rentenbescheids bei.Attach a copy of your current pension notice to the application.
- Der Studentenausweis reicht allein nicht als Nachweis für den Wohngeldantrag aus.The student ID alone is not enough proof for the housing benefit application.
Feminine nouns in -e (Straße, Rente) and weak masculine nouns (→ N05) often add -n- or -en-. Some drop the -e instead: die Miete → der Mietvertrag.

If the first word ends in one of these suffixes, you add -s-. No exceptions.

What to notice

Most of these words are feminine. Feminine nouns never take -s in the genitive, but they do in compounds.

Look at the first word
Check its ending and its gender.

Does it end in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tion or -tät? Then add -s-.
- Bescheinigung + -s- + formular = Bescheinigungsformular

Check for a feminine -e
Feminine and ends in -e? Usually add -n-. But some drop the -e and add nothing (Mietvertrag). When in doubt, check a dictionary.
- Urkunde + -n- + fälschung = Urkundenfälschung

Masculine or neuter with an -er plural? Add -er-.

Otherwise: usually nothing
Short masculine and neuter nouns usually take no linking letter. Some still take -s- (Antragsformular), so check a dictionary.

After -schaft, add -s-. Mitgliedsbescheinigung is also correct.

Why Wohnungstür, if the genitive is der Wohnung? Today the -s- has no grammatical meaning. It just joins the two parts.

Austria often adds an -s- where Germany has none. In documents in Germany, use the forms that are usual in Germany.
- In Germany: der Fabrikarbeiter, das Zugunglück
- In Austria: der Fabriksarbeiter, das Zugsunglück
In everyday language you often see Einkommenssteuer with -s-. The official word on all tax forms is Einkommensteuer, without -s-.

Sometimes the linking letter changes the meaning.

Linking letter, genitive or plural?

A linking letter adds no meaning: Wohnungstür is one door of one flat. A genitive ending or a plural ending does change the meaning.
