Read long compounds from the right, because the last part decides gender and meaning: die Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

- The last part decides gender and meaning: die Kraftfahrzeug-Haftpflichtversicherung.
- Read long words from right to left, one layer at a time.

Insurance and tax words are often very long. Each part tells you something: who is covered, what risk, what kind of payment.
The forms
The right-to-left anatomy of a multi-part compound
The base word (Grundwort) is always on the far right. It decides gender, plural and what the thing is. Everything to its left narrows it down.

Find the base word on the right
Ignore the start at first. The last part tells you the gender and what the thing is.

Read the rest from right to left
Ask: what kind of fee? A fee for a registration. What kind of registration? Of a business.

Spot the linking letters
Look for -s-, -es- or -en- between the parts (→ W11). After -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion and -tät there is always -s-.

Add a hyphen when you write
If your word has more than three parts or an abbreviation, put a hyphen at the main break. Never between small pieces.

Never write a compound with a space. Write one word or use a hyphen.

With an abbreviation like Kfz, IT or GmbH, always use a hyphen.

Exceptions

When a phrase is joined with hyphens, the first word and all nouns start with a capital letter. Other words stay lower case.

If you split a word in the wrong place, you get a strange meaning. Look for the real parts.

When a word with an abbreviation takes an ending, the ending goes on the base word, never on the abbreviation.

Good modern style avoids more than three or four parts. Turn a very long word into a phrase with a genitive or a preposition.

Don't mix it up
Compound, hyphenated compound, genitive or prepositional phrase
One word or hyphens are both correct. A genitive or a preposition is often clearer for very long ideas. Separate words with spaces are always wrong.
