When you use it
- 1

Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Check the two subjects
The project lead moved the meeting. The team got no message. Two different subjects, so you can't use zu. Use ohne dass.
- 2
Write the main clause and a comma
The main clause has its verb in position 2. Then a comma and ohne dass.
- Die Projektleiterin hat den Termin verschoben, ohne dass ...
- 3
Put the new subject right after
The subject of the second clause comes straight after ohne dass.
- ..., ohne dass die Teammitglieder ...
- 4
Send the verb to the end
Add the details. The conjugated verb goes last.
- Die Projektleiterin hat den Termin verschoben, ohne dass die Teammitglieder eine Nachricht bekamen. The project lead moved the meeting without the team members getting a message.
- 5
Or start with the clause
The dass clause can come first. Then the main verb follows right after the comma.
- Anstatt dass die Geschäftsleitung die offenen Fragen klärte, wurde das Projekt einfach abgebrochen.Instead of the management answering the open questions, the project was simply stopped.

Common mistakes
✕
Er ging, ohne dass ich ihn nicht gesehen habe.✓ Er ging, ohne dass ich ihn gesehen habe.
ohne dass is already negative. With nicht, it means you did see him.
✕
Er verließ das Meeting, ohne ich etwas sagen konnte.✓ Er verließ das Meeting, ohne dass ich etwas sagen konnte.
Different subjects (er, ich): you need ohne dass and a comma.
✕
Der Kollege hat die Daten gelöscht, ohne dass der Chef zu informieren.✓ Der Kollege hat die Daten gelöscht, ohne dass der Chef informiert wurde.
Never mix zu into a dass clause. It needs a subject and a conjugated verb.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
ohne dass is already negative. With nicht, the meaning flips: ohne dass ich ihn nicht gesehen habe means you did see him.
- Er ging, ohne dass ich ihn gesehen habe.He left without me seeing him.
For something that should have happened but didn't, people often use Konjunktiv II. The normal past is also correct.
- Er hat die Reparatur selbst gemacht, anstatt dass ein Fachmann gekommen wäre.He did the repair himself instead of a specialist coming.
außer dass gives a real fact that is an exception. außer wenn gives a condition: unless.
- Wir sind mit allem fertig, außer dass der Chef noch unterschreiben muss. We've finished everything, except that the boss still has to sign.
- Wir treffen uns morgen um 9 Uhr, außer wenn jemand krank wird. We're meeting tomorrow at 9, unless someone gets ill.
The conjunction is always dass with double s.
- außer dass
Don't mix it up
dass clauses vs. infinitive clauses and other connectors
