Putting parts after the final verb
Ausklammerung
In long sentences, you can put some phrases after the final verb: Das Startup ist schneller gewachsen als etablierte Anbieter.
Standard closed bracket vs. Ausklammerung
| Sentence type | Vorfeld | Linke Klammer (V1) | Mittelfeld | Rechte Klammer (V2) | Nachfeld (Ausklammerung) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The main points
- Ausklammerung puts a phrase after the final verb, into the Nachfeld.
- It makes long sentences easier to follow, especially in talks.
- Comparisons with als or wie usually go after the verb.
- Long phrases with a preposition, additions and lists can move too.
- Bare objects, pronouns and adjectives after sein stay inside.
Part 1 of 4
When you use it
- 1
Comparisons with als and wie
- Unser Marktanteil ist in diesem Quartal schneller gewachsen als der unserer Hauptkonkurrenten. Our market share grew faster this quarter than that of our main competitors.
- Wir haben bei der Erhebung deutlich mehr Teilnehmer befragt als ursprünglich geplant. In the survey, we asked far more participants than first planned.
Comparisons are the most common phrases after the final verb. Inside the bracket is possible, but after the verb usually sounds more natural.
- 2
Long phrases with a preposition
- Unser Forschungsteam hat die aktuellen Marktdaten analysiert auf der Grundlage von über zehntausend Kundeninterviews. Our research team analysed the latest market data based on more than ten thousand customer interviews.
- Die Geschäftsführung hat sich gestern Abend geeinigt auf eine schrittweise Erhöhung des Forschungsbudgets.Yesterday evening, the management agreed on a step-by-step increase in the research budget.
In a talk, listeners want to hear the main verb soon. So speakers often move a long phrase with a preposition after the verb.
- 3
Adding a detail: und zwar, vor allem
- Wir müssen unsere internen Prozesse dringend optimieren, und zwar im Bereich der Kundenbetreuung. We urgently need to improve our internal processes, namely in customer support.
- Die Verkaufszahlen sind im Frühjahr drastisch eingebrochen, vor allem bei den hochpreisigen Modellen.Sales fell sharply in spring, especially for the expensive models.
First close the bracket, then add a detail with und zwar, nämlich, insbesondere or vor allem.
💡 Tip: These additions take a comma.
The forms
Standard closed bracket vs. Ausklammerung
A sentence has five zones: Vorfeld, verb 1, Mittelfeld (middle field), verb 2, and Nachfeld. Ausklammerung puts something into the Nachfeld, after verb 2.
| Sentence type | Vorfeld | Linke Klammer (V1) | Mittelfeld | Rechte Klammer (V2) | Nachfeld (Ausklammerung) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
What to notice
The main verb (besprochen, gewachsen) comes earlier. The part after it is correct German, not a mistake.
Part 2 of 4
Step by step
- 1
Find the two verb parts
Verb 1 is in position 2 (haben, sein, a modal verb). Verb 2 is at the end (participle, infinitive or prefix).
- Ich habe [die Methodik meiner Studie vor den versammelten Fachkollegen im großen Hörsaal] erläutert.I explained the method of my study to the assembled colleagues in the large lecture hall.
- 2
Is the middle field too full?
Here it holds an object and two long phrases with a preposition. The listener waits a long time for the verb.
- 3
Choose what to move
Leave the accusative object inside. Choose the long phrase with a preposition.
- vor den versammelten Fachkollegen im großen Hörsaal
- 4
Move it after the final verb
Put the chosen phrase right after verb 2.
- Ich habe die Methodik meiner Studie erläutert vor den versammelten Fachkollegen im großen Hörsaal.I explained the method of my study to the assembled colleagues in the large lecture hall.
- 5
Check the comma
No comma before a simple phrase or comparison. Use a comma before und zwar, nämlich or vor allem, and before a clause with its own verb.
- Wir haben gesprochen über die neuen Budgetgrenzen. We talked about the new budget limits. (no comma)
- Wir müssen die Präsentation kürzen, und zwar um mindestens fünf Folien. We have to shorten the presentation, namely by at least five slides.
Part 3 of 4
Common mistakes
✕
Der Referent hat gehalten eine hervorragende Präsentation.✓ Der Referent hat eine hervorragende Präsentation gehalten.
An accusative object without a preposition stays inside the bracket.
✕
Wir haben gedankt für die rege Beteiligung den anwesenden Gästen.✓ Wir haben den anwesenden Gästen für die rege Beteiligung gedankt.
A dative object stays inside. Only phrases with a preposition can move.
✕
Die Projektleiterin hat vorbereitet sich sehr gründlich auf den Vortrag.✓ Die Projektleiterin hat sich sehr gründlich auf den Vortrag vorbereitet. (or: ... hat sich sehr gründlich vorbereitet auf den Vortrag.)
sich sits near the front of the middle field. It never goes after the verb.
Exceptions
Tap one to open it.
The last place in a sentence carries the most weight. A phrase after the verb stands out more.
- Ich habe mit Herrn Dr. Müller über die Finanzierung gesprochen.I spoke with Dr Müller about the financing. (neutral)
- Ich habe über die Finanzierung gesprochen – mit Herrn Dr. Müller persönlich.I spoke about the financing – with Dr Müller himself. (stresses who)
A one-word comparison can stand in either place. A long comparison sounds clumsy inside the bracket, so put it after the verb.
- Er hat besser gesprochen als ich. / Er hat besser als ich gesprochen. He spoke better than I did. (both possible)
- Das Team hat ein besseres Ergebnis erzielt als im letzten Quartal von der Geschäftsleitung vorgelegt. The team got a better result than the one management presented last quarter.
In talks and meetings, moving phrases is common and helpful. In contracts and official letters, the closed bracket is still normal. In written exams, move mainly comparisons and additions.
Move one heavy phrase, not three separate ones. Too many things after the verb make the sentence sound broken.
- ✗ Ich habe referiert über den Klimawandel gestern mit großem Erfolg an der Universität.
- ✓ Ich habe gestern an der Universität referiert über die sozioökonomischen Folgen des Klimawandels.Yesterday I gave a talk at the university on the social and economic effects of climate change.
Don't mix it up
Ausklammerung vs. other sentence endings
Ausklammerung moves a phrase, usually without a comma. Right dislocation repeats a pronoun after a comma. An infinitive clause has zu + verb.
| Feature | Ausklammerung (Nachfeld) | Right dislocation (Rechtsversetzung) | Infinitive clause (Infinitivgruppe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What stands at the end? | A regular prepositional phrase, comparison, or list | A noun phrase that repeats a pronoun already used | An action introduced by zu + infinitive |
| Punctuation | Usually no comma (except full clauses and und zwar) | Always a comma | Usually a comma |
| Pronoun copy present? | No (the phrase appears only once) | Yes (a pronoun like er, sie, das anticipated it) | No |
| Example | Ich habe gesprochen mit dem Referenten. | Ich kenne ihn gut, den Referenten. | Ich plane, den Referenten einzuladen. |
| Register | Professional speaking, lecturing, formal writing | Colloquial, emotional speech | Standard formal and spoken German |
